Project Hail Mary 2 Status Update Confirms Andy Weir’s Sequel Will Avoid Disappointment

The latest update on Project Hail Mary‘s sequel is a great sign for Andy Weir’s follow-up to Ryan Gosling’s blockbuster hit. The author originally released the sci-fi book in 2021, with 2026 bringing the long-awaited adaptation to theaters with Gosling playing Ryland Grace. Audiences wound up loving his and Rocky’s relationship, the epic space adventure, and the emotional and funny narrative.

That is why the movie earned a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and audiences alike. The great reception translated to Project Hail Mary grossing $684 million at the box office, setting records for Amazon MGM, directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and Andy Weir book adaptations. Hollywood previously found success with Ridley Scott and Matt Damon turning his debut novel, The Martian, into a $630 million hit.

For those reasons, the chances of a Project Hail Mary sequel happening have continued to be debated. Weir has not already written a sequel book that a follow-up movie could adapt. Lord and Miller, Gosling, and Amazon need him if Grace and Rocky’s story is going to continue. The author has always been open to that possibility, but, as Weir told ScreenRant in a Project Hail Mary sequel update, it is not close.

He reiterated that he’s not actively writing a sequel, focusing on another book instead, and that he wants to avoid “obvious ideas” for what could come next. Importantly, Weir insisted, “I’m waiting until I come up with something genuinely good and unique” to really get to work on a Project Hail Mary sequel, which is just what the book and eventual movie adaptation need to avoid disappointing.

Project Hail Mary 2’s Story Development Is Taking The Right Approach

It’s no surprise that Weir has given himself high standards for Project Hail Mary 2‘s story. The first book in a potential Ryland Grace-focused franchise captivated readers and moviegoers alike because of its inventive, science-driven, emotional, and comedic story. Just as he did with The Martian, Weir found a way to make a hard sci-fi story that also felt incredibly accessible and entertaining.

Those hallmarks are sure to be in Project Hail Mary 2, but it’s important that the story stays fresh. The worst thing Weir could do is rush his way through the ideation phase of the book just to meet the current demand for another story. Any additional adventure with Ryland and Rocky must live up to the greatness of the first movie, and that can only be done if Weir sorts through several ideas to find the best path forward.

That’s why it is so reassuring to know that he’s waiting to move forward with developing a Project Hail Mary sequel until he finds a story that is “genuinely good and unique.” He clearly understands the need to surprise audiences with whatever would come next rather than giving them something expected or by-the-numbers. Those options may have produced a sequel faster, but the quality of the story probably would have suffered.

Andy Weir Can Afford To Take His Time Developing Project Hail Mary

Standard Hollywood franchise operations would suggest a Project Hail Mary sequel would be fast-tracked if not for Weir’s conditions to make it. Amazon MGM would certainly pounce on the opportunity to make a follow-up quickly if it were entirely up to them, but several factors allow the sequel to move a bit slower than usual.

For starters, Project Hail Mary has not faded from pop culture. The film is still finding success and attracting new viewers on streaming. It is also certainly going to get a boost in awareness as Amazon pushes it for contention in the 2027 Oscars categories like Best Picture. As long as the sci-fi movie remains popular, it buys the studio and Weir a bit more time to figure out what a sequel could look like.

Even if Weir had an immediate idea for the sequel that met his standards, he’s preoccupied. The author is currently finishing the first draft of his next sci-fi book. He told us in the same interview that the novel shrouded in secrecy is still a year or so away from coming out, meaning he is busy with it until late 2027 or early 2028. That book will remain his priority, giving him time to continue kicking around ideas for Project Hail Mary 2.

There’s also no rush to develop the sequel given Ryan Gosling’s schedule. He’s set to be very busy leading Ghost Rider for Marvel Studios. The 2028 blockbuster is next up on his slate, while discussions continue about returning as Ken for Barbie 2. With the hopeful franchise’s movie star locked up with other projects, that also decreases the pressure to figure out Project Hail Mary 2 quickly.

Project Hail Mary 2 is certainly the Andy Weir adaptation audiences want to see the most, even before its source material exists, but Hollywood can stay in business with him without the sequel. Lord and Miller are still working through how they could turn his second novel, Artemis, into a movie.

The directors have been attached to a film adaptation of the 2017 book since that same year, but they pivoted to make Project Hail Mary first. A reason for the switch was that it became a challenge figuring out how to bring the moon-set story to life with realistic gravity. However, Lord and Miller confirmed to ScreenRant in February 2026 that they think they cracked the code to filming Artemis, suggesting it could happen sooner rather than later.

On top of an Artemis adaptation gaining steam, there will certainly be a bidding war for the movie rights to Weir’s next novel once it gets more finalized. After The Martian and Project Hail Mary‘s success, every studio and creative will want a shot at bringing his next story to the big screen. Depending on how quickly things move, that book could be the next movie based on Weir’s writings to hit theaters.

When Could A Project Hail Mary Sequel Finally Release?

Based on everything we know about Project Hail Mary 2‘s status and development, audiences should be prepared to wait a while to read the book and see a movie adaptation. There is always the chance that Weir is never satisfied and a sequel doesn’t happen. However, it seems more likely that it will happen at some point, just not for a few more years.

Unlike several authors who turn out new stories at a prolific pace, Weir takes a lot of time to research and write his books. There was a six-year gap between The Martian and Artemis. Another four years passed before Project Hail Mary debuted. If his new book comes out sometime in 2027, there will have been another six years between his novels.

That could mean a Project Hail Mary sequel movie wouldn’t be ready until 2028 or 2029 under the most optimistic outcomes. Amazon, Lord and Miller, and Gosling would have to be in constant communication with Weir and get a jump start on developing the movie adaptation before the film even comes out for such a fast turnaround. Even in such a scenario, it could still take until 2030 or later to see Ryland Grace and Rocky back on the big screen.
