The Florida Gators have never participated in the College Football Playoff, and for the first time since 2020, they find themselves firmly in the discussion for the illustrious postseason event.
Florida first entered the CFP conversation after its Week 4 rout of a top-10-ranked Ole Miss in the Swamp, which elevated the Gators to No. 8 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Since then, a pair of blowout losses against Missouri and South Carolina — the latter on homecoming — significantly diminished the Orange and Blue’s stock, but another top-10 win over Texas in Austin during Week 7 resurrected their playoff hopes.
Jon Sumrall and Co. now face No. 3 Georgia this weekend and a victory over their cross-border rival would significantly improve their postseason resume. With that in mind, it is worth taking a look at where Florida stands among its peers when it comes to making the 12-team field this winter.
CBS Sports’ David Cobb recently ranked the resumes of the top CFP contenders by combining “10 different power ratings into a single metric to paint a true picture of how difficult an opponent is to beat” and feeding that data into “a simple formula inspired by the NCAA’s Wins Above Bubble (WAB) metric in college basketball.”
Heading into Week 9, the results ranked Florida at No. 13 with a resume score of 1.07 — right behind No. 12 Georgia and its 1.09 resume score. The two are among seven SEC schools that made the top 15 list, giving the conference the largest representation with nearly half the spots in the resume rankings.
An SEC team also leads the pack. Kentucky sits in the top spot with a resume score of 2.39, followed by UCLA (1.87), Indiana (1.87), Alabama (1.82) and Texas (1.81). The remaining league schools in the rankings are Ole Miss (No. 8, 1.49) and LSU (No. 15, 0.91).
There are still five weeks remaining on the 2026 college football schedule, so there is plenty of time for things to change. If the Gators prevail against the Bulldogs, they can further bolster their CFP resume by beating the top-ranked Wildcats on Nov. 14 in Lexington.
But first things first: Florida and Georgia face off on Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, where the action kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
