If you watched Bridge to Terabithia as a kid, there’s a good chance Josh Hutcherson was responsible for one of your first devastating movie experiences. It seemed like a fun fantasy adventure about two kids creating an imaginary world, until that heartbreaking ending. Hutcherson was only 14 when the film came out, but he’d already starred in Little Manhattan and Zathura. Originally repored by ComingSoon, he’d wanted to act since childhood, and his family moved from Kentucky to Los Angeles to help him pursue it. By the time he was a teenager, Hutcherson already had several movies under his belt (via WCPO).
Most people probably know Hutcherson best as Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games. Opposite Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen, Peeta wasn’t the strongest or most intimidating tribute, but he was willing to risk his life to protect her. As the movies went on, Peeta’s relationship with Katniss became more complicated, especially after the Capitol captured him and turned him against her. Hutcherson played Peeta across all four films, showing how much the character changed from the kindhearted boy who chose to protect and love Katniss. Just to turn into someone who could no longer trust his own memories.
It’s hard to imagine Peeta Mellark getting into some of the situations Hutcherson’s characters have found themselves in since The Hunger Games. In Future Man, he played a janitor who accidentally became a time-traveling hero, while Five Nights at Freddy’s had him spending his nights trapped in a restaurant with murderous animatronics. He was even the bad guy in The Beekeeper, playing a wealthy scammer who made it incredibly easy to root for Jason Statham to beat him up (via Entertainment Weekly). With another round of Five Nights at Freddy’s on his schedule and a few less recognizable projects ahead, it’ll be interesting to see where Hutcherson goes from here.

Josh Hutcherson will play a rookie priest in Blasphemous, a horror movie about an exorcism that goes horribly wrong. His character is assigned to transport a possessed young woman (Karen Gillan) alongside a more experienced priest (Clive Owen). According to SYFY. they’re supposed to get her somewhere secure, so an exorcism can take place, but she escapes before they reach their destination. The two priests are left trying to find her while dealing with whatever supernatural forces have taken hold of her.
Blasphemous is the feature directorial debut of Luke Piotrowski, who previously co-wrote The Night House and Hellraiser. The screenplay appeared on the 2023 Black List and has been compared to a combination of The Exorcist and Training Day (via ScreenDaily). Dwayne Johnson is among the producers through Seven Bucks Productions. Filming was scheduled to begin in New York in August 2026, with the movie expected to arrive in 2027 (via SevenBucks Productions).

Hutcherson is expected to return as Mike Schmidt in Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, continuing his involvement in the horror franchise that began in 2023. The first movie followed Mike as he took a security job at an abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, only to discover that its animatronics were possessed by murdered children. The 2025 sequel brought Mike and his younger sister, Abby, back into the restaurant’s disturbing history, revealing more about the murders and the people responsible.
The second movie also left several storylines unresolved, including the return of William Afton (Matthew Lillard), whose crimes were responsible for much of the franchise’s horror. Lillard confirmed in September 2026 that he’d received an early version of the third film’s screenplay, with production expected to begin in 2027 (via BloodyDisgusting). Hutcherson is listed as returning on IMDb, although Universal Pictures hasn’t officially announced a release date or revealed what Mike’s next encounter with the animatronics will involve.

Josh Hutcherson is taking on his first major DC role as Scott Free, the superhero known as Mister Miracle, in an upcoming animated series (via TheWrap). Scott was raised on Apokolips, a planet ruled by the ruthless Darkseid, where he endured years of imprisonment and torture before escaping. He eventually settles on Earth with his wife, Big Barda (Mackenzie Davis), and becomes a famous escape artist. But his efforts to live a normal life are complicated by his past, especially when a war between Apokolips and New Genesis threatens to pull him back into the conflict.
The animated series is based on Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ acclaimed Mister Miracle comics, which follows Scott as he tries to balance his marriage to Big Barda with the lasting effects of his childhood on Apokolips (via DC Studios). Even with a war between two planets unfolding, much of the story focuses on the couple’s relationship and the challenges they face at home. King is serving as showrunner and has written all eight episodes of the adaptation. DC Studios is reportedly aiming for a 2028 premiere, although an official release date hasn’t been announced (via ComingSoon).

Hutcherson is attached to star alongside Diane Keaton and Andy Garcia in Artist in Residence, a comedy about a New York artist fighting to keep her home. Max is initially tasked with getting her to leave, but he eventually becomes one of her supporters.
Raymond De Felitta, known for City Island, is writing and directing the film, which was announced in May 2022. Despite Josh Hutcherson’s involvement, Artist in Residence is still in pre-production, with no confirmed release date (via IMDB).
