Recent UFC event sparks cartoonish viewership claim vs. the Super Bowl

Yes, Idiocracy was a documentary.

It’s been easy to ignore most of the outlandish things said and done in connection with the recent decision to stage UFC fights on the White House lawn. If the President wants to have an elaborate 80th birthday party (which may or may not have included a family member’s attempt to win a little extra money through inside information) that’s his prerogative.

But even in post-truth, post-sanity, post-democracy America, some things can’t be overlooked.

Case in point. Via Drew Lerner of Awful Announcing, Republican National Committee chairman Joe Gruters has declared, with a straight face, “I think more people watched [UFC Freedom 250] than watched the Super Bowl.”

As Lerner notes, Paramount+ (the exclusive platform for the event) doesn’t have enough global subscribers to even come close to matching the size of the Super Bowl’s audience.

We should have seen this coming, from the moment the crowd at the 2017 inauguration was inflated with the assistance of “alternative facts.” Gruters’s claim originates from an alternative universe.

Or, quite possibly, it simply flows from the bottomless barrel of bullshit to which we are constantly subjected. To the point at which we all become numb to it.

Hell, I almost didn’t even mention it because, at this point, who cares? Everyone knows the deal. It’s been, and it will continue to be, one lie after another after another. After another.

Whatever a person’s political beliefs, we should strive for normal. Normal is good. Normal is normal.

Unfortunately, normal has become the new abnormal.
