One of the best World War II-era dramas since HBO’s Band of Brothers officially returns to the US in two weeks with a new season. 25 years later, Band of Brothers is still the pinnacle of World War II storytelling. Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ limited series, based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose’s non-fiction book of the same name and personal accounts from Easy Company survivors, did what seemed impossible in 2001: bringing cinematic visuals and spectacle to an intimate, character-focused story of brotherhood and trauma, set during one of the most harrowing periods in history.
Though many shows have tried (and, in some cases, succeeded) to replicate Band of Brothers’ unique achievements, including companion series like The Pacific and Apple TV’s Masters of the Air and spiritual successors like the BBC’s SAS: Rogue Heroes, another international World War II-era thriller series offers a different and darker yet no less effective look at one of the world’s deadliest conflicts.
Das Boot, a TV sequel to the seminal 1981 German film of the same name and partially inspired by author Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s own Das Boot follow-up, Die Festung — literally translated, “The Fortress” — revisits the claustrophobic environment of the original movie’s U-boat setting while expanding its character-driven storytelling into German-occupied France, as well as Portugal, Italy, and the United States. The show has had a strange release in the US, but episodes are now surfacing much faster after a new streamer acquired the rights to the full series.
Das Boot Season 3 Is Arriving On MHz Choice Only 3 Months After Season 2’s Debut

Season 1 of Das Boot first emerged in the US on Hulu in July 2019, roughly six months after its European premiere in 2018. The first season, set in 1942, is still available to stream on Hulu and Prime Video. Das Boot season 2 finally arrived in August this year, a full seven years later — though it’s not on Hulu. Thankfully, the show has found a new home.
MHz Choice, a North American streamer specializing in international productions from across the world, including Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and Oceania, picked up the rights to platform the full series. Das Boot season 1 debuted on MHz Choice in July 2026, season 2 arrived with a weekly release schedule in August, and now, just three months later, Das Boot season 3 will premiere on Tuesday, November 10, as a US-only release. There’s still time to catch up before season 3 drops; seasons 1 and 2 have eight episodes each for a total runtime of 7 hours and 30 minutes, while the upcoming third season features 10 episodes.
Though 2018’s Das Boot is technically a sequel series, viewers don’t need to have seen the original film to understand the show. Season 1 introduces a new submarine, U-612, and a fresh (and untested) crew, roughly nine months after the events of Wolfgang Petersen’s 1981 classic.
Das Boot isn’t the first international series to languish in the US streaming landscape after one season, either. MHz Choice similarly resuscitated the 1920-set German neo-noir political thriller Babylon Berlin; four of its five seasons are now available to stream, with the fifth and final season set to arrive in February 2027.
Das Boot Season 4 Marks The Final Installment Of The WW2 Series
Das Boot season 4, which originally premiered in Europe in September 2023, will also be released on MHz Choice, though a release date has yet to be confirmed. The fourth season starts in August 1943 and is the show’s final and shortest outing, consisting of just six episodes. Das Boot season 4 was filmed at the same time Sky Deutschland announced it was cutting production on all original scripted dramas, including the previously mentioned Babylon Berlin (via THR).
Those interested in Das Boot or any of MHz Choice’s other excellent international shows can choose between a monthly, ad-free subscription for $8.99 or an annual subscription at $89.99. All in all, Das Boot is one of the most realistic and haunting depictions of World War II — it’s well worth a watch now that the show will be released in full in the US, especially after season 1’s explosive (but ultimately frustrating) cliffhanger ending.
Das Boot season 3 premieres on MHz Choice on November 10.
