Esteban Ocon has spoken for the first time since his axe from this weekend’s F1 Mexico GP, as he denies any physical violence.
It was shocking news from Haas on Saturday when they announced that Ocon would not compete in the rest of the F1 Mexico GP weekend and would be replaced by test driver Ryo Hirakawa, who drove in his car in FP1.
The Japanese driver eventually got the run in FP3 and completed his first F1 qualifying session in 19th. The WEC driver only got the message on Saturday morning that he would be making his debut this weekend in the Mexico GP.
In the meantime, reports started to emerge from French media about a disagreement between Ocon and Haas in Friday’s debrief, which spiralled after a radio conversation between the Frenchman and his race engineer Laura Mueller.
The report noted a physical altercation between Ocon and Haas F1 team principal Ayao Komatsu. However, the Frenchman has categorically denied any physical violence in his first response on the matter, where he confirmed a disagreement.
Ocon Clears The Air on Media Reports
“Following the recent decision from Haas F1 Team confirming that I will not be participating in this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix, I wish to formally address some media reports and speculation surrounding the situation,” wrote Ocon.
“Last night, a difference in viewpoints led to a discussion with the parties involved. Whilst I acknowledge that this took place, I categorically reject any reports or allegations suggesting that any form of physical violence was used to resolve any differences of any nature.
“I strongly condemn violence in all its forms and firmly believe that disagreements should always be handled with professionalism, respect, and mutual understanding. I kindly ask that speculation be avoided while the matter is being addressed. Further updates will be communicated in due course,” summed up Ocon.
