The famed actress, 77, was most recently seen in FX and Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story season 13, reprising her various roles from the horror series that saw her play everything from a Supreme witch to the abusive grandmother of the Antichrist. But with that series recently concluding, it seems that the role that revived her career could also be part of her swan song.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Lange said, “Actually, I feel like I’m coming to an end.” She continued, “And maybe it’s not a bad way to end, you know, the last film being Long Day’s Journey Into Night and playing Mary Tyrone.” Lange is referring to the upcoming film directed by Jonathan Kent in his feature directorial debut. Based on the 1956 play by Eugene O’Neill, Lange stars alongside Ed Harris, Ben Foster, and Colin Morgan.
The film follows Lange’s Mary Tyrone, grappling with a morphine addiction, as her sons and husband confront her over her drug use. The film first premiered in 2025 at the Dublin Film Festival. Lange won several awards tied to the film, including the Icon Awards at the Newport Beach Film Festival and the Chelsea Film Festival, the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Savannah Film Festival, and the Visionary Award at the Virginia Film Festival.

It would be the end of a storied career, one that also includes two Academy Awards (one for Best Supporting Actress for Tootsie and one for Best Actress for Blue Sky). Lange was nominated four more times for the films Frances, Country, Sweet Dreams, and Music Box. Lange first made her screen debut in 1976 and has acted in over 30 films and various television series.
It’s American Horror Story that introduced the actress to an entirely new generation, though. Lange debuted in the first season, subtitled Murder House, as Constance Langdon, and she went on to star in five more seasons: Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, Apocalypse, and the aforementioned landmark 13th season. This sparked a collaborative relationship with Murphy that also saw her star in Feud: Bette and Joan, The Politician, and Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.
These roles made her an icon for a whole new generation, sparking countless memes, costumes, and pleas for Lange to return to the American Horror Story series after a prolonged hiatus. Fans got their wish in the thirteenth season, which saw Lange reprise all her roles from previous seasons, including Elsa Mars, Fiona Goode, and Sister Jude Martin. She also played Margaret Thatcher.
More of Lange’s credits include The Postman Always Rings Twice, Far North, Men Don’t Leave, and Cape Fear, the latter of which was recently remade into an Apple TV series. Lange also dabbled in theater, starring in stagings of A Streetcar Named Desire, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, The Glass Menagerie, and Mother Play.
While Lange teases the end of her career, it’s not an outright confirmation of retirement and many actors work well into their later lives. However, it’s no secret that roles for older women in Hollywood can be scarce, and it may be that Lange is facing the unfortunate fact that pickings are slim. However, any production would be lucky to have the storied actress.
