Netflix's Blue Eye Samurai Returns With New Prequel In 3 Months

After four years of waiting, fans of Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai have plenty to look forward to in 2027, with two exciting new releases coming to the franchise. While January 2027 is already on fans’ radar for the return of the animated series with Season 2, they can now add February 2027 to the calendar, as Mizu is also set to return in a brand-new, four-part prequel.

Blue Eye Samurai is one of the best shows Netflix has ever produced, and it quickly amassed a dedicated fanbase. However, those fans have had to endure a long four-year wait between the first and second seasons. Thankfully, that wait will soon be over, as Season 2 is set to premiere in January 2027. Picking up where the previous season left off, the new season will follow Mizu on her treacherous sea voyage to London.

In addition to the series’ return in January, fans can also look forward to the official prequel, Blue Eye Samurai: Cry of the Yurei, with its first installment set to release on February 3, 2027. Honestly, it’s pretty awesome that, after four years without any new releases, fans are now getting two separate Blue Eye Samurai releases within a month of each other. It’s certainly a great way to make the long wait feel more than worthwhile.

Brought to life by Dark Horse Comics, Cry of the Yurei will be a four-part comic miniseries that delivers a prequel exploring an all-new chapter in the backstory of Blue Eye Samurai herself, Mizu. Fans can expect a genuine expansion of the animated series’ lore, as the story is canon and was developed in direct consultation with the show’s creators. This collaboration helps ensure that Blue Eye Samurai makes an authentic transition into this exciting new medium.
