Netflix’s Gears Of War Movie Gets Major Status Update From Director

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix’s Gears of War adaptation is moving along swiftly.

Netflix first acquired the rights to The Coalition’s hit sci-fi action franchise in late 2022, making plans for both a film and an animated series to launch an interconnected universe of stories. Dune alum Jon Spaihts was brought onboard to pen the Gears of War movie‘s script in early 2023, while The Fall Guy‘s David Leitch was tapped to direct in May 2025, though few major updates have come since.

Now, in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Brandon Zachary for his new heist thriller How to Rob a Bank, Leitch was asked for a status update on Netflix’s Gears of War movie. The director/co-producer confirmed that a version of the script is currently complete for the adaptation, and expressed that “everybody’s excited” about the progress being made, though cautioned there may still be some time before it moves forward:

David Leitch: Obviously, E-Day is about to be released. I think everybody’s excited about the potential of this as a film universe, and so we couldn’t be more excited of that. Hopefully, it’ll be coming to fruition soon. That’s probably all I can tell you. And I wish I could tell you more because there’s so much cool stuff going on.

Leitch’s new update on the Gears of War movie largely aligns with the previous one that came from Xbox exec Matt Booty, in which he revealed that the adaptation would explore the origin story of Delta Squad and the bonds of brotherhood the soldiers forged while fighting together against the Locust. This did raise questions as to whether iconic game protagonist Marcus Fenix would appear in the film, especially given the newly-released E-Day‘s prequel setting still included the future Delta leader.

Though his new comments may not offer a direct timeline as to when production or casting may begin on the film, Leitch’s assurance that Gears of War is moving along and could come to fruition soon comes at a good moment for the director. Very quickly after wrapping production on How to Rob a Bank, Leitch got to work on his meta new action comedy Jason Statham Stole My Bike, which also wrapped production this past July, well ahead of its August 6, 2027 release date.

Leitch does remain plenty busy on the producer’s side of things, with his 87North banner also gearing up for the long-awaited arrival of Violent Night 2 in December. However, apart from post-production on the aforementioned Statham film and various pre-release interviews, his schedule is notably opening up in a fitting manner to finally get the Netflix film off the ground.

One of the other most notable takeaways from Leitch’s new comments is that Netflix is still looking to utilize their Gears of War film to launch a full-fledged universe on the streamer. More and more video game adaptations are finding success with the model, particularly Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. With Netflix also expanding their genre output with the likes of Assassin’s Creed, Devil May Cry, and Crazy Taxi adaptations, among others, it certainly makes sense they’ll be keen to make full use of the sci-fi action property.

The Gears of War franchise is a popular series of third-person shooter video games developed by Epic Games and The Coalition and published by Microsoft Studios. Set on the planet Sera, it follows the conflict between humanity and the monstrous Locust Horde. Known for its intense combat, deep storytelling, and iconic characters like Marcus Fenix, the series has expanded into novels and comics.
