Sophie Cunningham’s future is enveloped in some uncertainty as the WNBA offseason gets underway.
The Indiana Fever guard is a pending free agent, and it is not certain that she will return to Indianapolis for a third season as Caitlin Clark’s popular “enforcer.”
It turns out though that Cunningham needs her own enforcement away from the court, after a turbulent 2026 season that spiraled out of her control amid remarks she made about transgender athletes.

Speaking on her “No Hesitation” podcast, Cunningham made the revelation that she has hired around-the-clock security personnel to tail her amid her increased public profile.

“In certain places, people knew who I was and I couldn’t really go anywhere,” Cunningham explained. “Now it doesn’t matter what state, what city, it’s everywhere.”
Cunningham said the motivation was for her safety and to “fill up her own cup.” She wants to give back her “best energy” and “be nice and positive” — a courtesy she notably did not extend to transgender athletes during her ESPN interview earlier this year.
“I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest,” Cunningham said in July. “And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
The timing, months after former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White attempted to declare for the WNBA Draft and the Seattle Stormejected two of Cunningham’s supporters from Climate Pledge Arena, is eyebrow-raising if nothing else.
