Carson Hocevar is once again making headlines, but this time it is not because of a big finish or a trip to Victory Lane. The Spire Motorsports driver found himself at the center of controversy following Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway after a heated incident with Austin Cindric.
Hocevar and Cindric made contact multiple times throughout the race, but things eventually reached a breaking point. During one incident, Hocevar appeared to slow down on the straightaway, leaving Cindric with nowhere to go. The resulting contact heavily damaged the No. 2 Ford and ultimately ended Cindric’s afternoon.
Cindric was furious over the incident, questioning NASCAR about what Hocevar was doing behind the wheel. He also suggested that Hocevar had repeatedly attempted to brake-check him during their battle.
Hocevar Responds to the Controversy
When asked about the incident, Hocevar did not seem particularly concerned about the criticism.
The young driver described the situation as simply part of racing at Martinsville, explaining that drivers are constantly making aggressive moves and dealing with contact throughout the afternoon.
Hocevar also admitted that sometimes drivers are on the receiving end of contact and sometimes they are responsible for it.
While Cindric was unable to continue, Hocevar managed to finish the race in 21st place, two laps down.
Hocevar Has More to Prove
Despite the disappointing finish, Hocevar remains an important part of Spire Motorsports’ future. He has already demonstrated his ability to compete with NASCAR’s best, including earning his first Cup Series victory earlier this season at Talladega.
However, Sunday’s controversy adds another chapter to his reputation as one of NASCAR’s most aggressive young drivers.
With the Homestead season finale approaching, Hocevar will have an opportunity to put Martinsville behind him and finish the season on a high note.
