Ashton Jeanty thinks the New York Jets defense is soft. That is the clear message from the second-year Raiders running back, who is struggling to find his footing this season. Despite averaging just 3.1 yards per carry through seven games, Jeanty told reporters this week that he sees a lack of effort on the other side of the ball. He believes his team can exploit that weakness and run wild against the Green and White.

A Running Back’s Bold Claims

The 22-year-old did not hold back when asked about the upcoming matchup at MetLife Stadium. Even with his own team on a four-game losing streak, Jeanty smiled and offered a sharp critique of the Jets. “I think we can definitely get the run game going, get back on track and just really get after these guys,” Jeanty said this week, according to the New York Post. He followed that up with a specific jab at the players tasked with stopping him. “Couple of guys out there that don’t really want to tackle, but I’m not going to say names,” he added.

This is not just trash talk; it is a direct challenge to the unit that has allowed 128.1 rushing yards per game this season. The numbers show the Jets are vulnerable, ranking 24th in the league against the run. Jeanty knows the stats, and he is betting his reputation on them. He thinks the defense is tired and lacks the desire to make the hard hits required to stop him.

The Defense Fires Back

The Jets did not ignore the insult. Several members of the defense heard the comments and chose to let their play do the talking. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick addressed the noise on Thursday with a calm, focused response. “Of course, whenever our name is brought up, it catches our eye, but the way I operate, I go out there and play 110 percent effort, no matter who I’m playing against, no matter what they say,” Fitzpatrick said Thursday. He acknowledged the heat but refused to get distracted by the words.

Cornerback Jarvis Brownlee took a more aggressive route on social media, telling Jeanty to “Stand on that, woe.” Brownlee then made his stance clear to the media at his locker. “We’re gonna see Sunday,” Brownlee said. Ollie Gordon II, the Miami running back, forced a career-high 10 missed tackles in a loss that left the Jets with a 2-5 record. The team knows they must fix their technique, but they are not letting a second‑year player’s words shake their resolve.

Why Jeanty Is Wrong About This

Jeanty’s confidence seems misplaced given his own production. He ranks 49th in the NFL in rushing yards per carry and has yet to justify his high draft status. The Raiders offense ranks 31st in rushing yards per game, averaging a meager 74.7 yards. It is hard to believe a back with such limited success can suddenly dominate a defense just by calling them out. The Jets have shown they can bounce back, and they have a strong reason to prove him wrong at home.

Defensive coordinator Brian Duker admits there is work to do but remains confident in his group. “I’ve got plenty of confidence in our guys,” Duker said. “I think it can be better.” The Jets face a Raiders offense that struggles to move the ball, making this a prime spot for New York to tighten up its defense. Jeanty wants to look like Jim Brown, but the Jets are ready to make him look like just another back who talked too much.
