Brewers stop World Series parade to honor Bob Uecker in emotional moment

A giant mural of Bob Uecker towered over East Mason Street on Friday as the Milwaukee Brewers stopped their World Series championship parade to honor him.

The buses pulled up at the corner of Mason and Jackson and stayed about 10 minutes. Players climbed off, hoisted the World Series trophy toward the mural and slapped hands with fans while blue and gold confetti came down. The crowd chanted “Ueck!”

Uecker called Brewers games for 54 seasons. He died in January 2025 at 90 years old, 21 months before the franchise won its first World Series. Friday, the Brewers made sure that his legacy and family was a part of the team’s first World Series championship celebration.

The Uecker family led the celebration.

Manager Pat Murphy pointed up at the wall. Fans answered with “Thank you, Murph.”

The players posed for selfies with the Uecker mural behind them. Some of them, FOX6 Milwaukee reported, tipped back Miller Lite, the beer Uecker sold for decades in commercials.

Mauricio Ramirez finished the portrait in June on the side of Wintrust Financial Center. It was paid for by the building’s owners, Milwaukee Downtown and Visit Milwaukee.

“Bob loved Milwaukee, and greatly appreciated the connection he had with the city,” Bob Uecker Jr. said in May, when the painting started going up.

City officials had expected about 400,000 people downtown. A lot of them ended up at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater for the rally, where Uecker came up again.

Ryan Braun, the 2011 National League MVP, got the place chanting “Ueck.”

Robin Yount came out last, riding Uecker’s Harley Davidson onto the stage.

He’d done something like this a week earlier. Before Game 1, Yount walked to the mound in one of Uecker’s plaid sports coats and took it off to show a “Ueck” jersey underneath. Up in the radio booth, Lane Grindle, Jeff Levering, Josh Maurer and engineer Kent Sommerfeld all wore blazers out of Uecker’s closet.

“We should celebrate forever,” Christian Yelich told the crowd Friday.

Yount closed it.

“God bless you, Bob Uecker.”
