Clint Eastwood's Classic Thriller Is Still His Greatest Movie 22 Years Later

Molly DeCastro is a New York-based emerging film and entertainment journalist with a personal passion for poetic prose and impactful storytelling. She graduated from Pace University with a degree in English and a concentration in creative writing. While film analysis is at the heart of her work, she is especially interested in exploring cinema through an anthropological lens and in examining how creative themes reflect cultural identity. She aims to forge a deep connection between audiences and film through thoughtful and evocative writing.

She also enjoys keeping up with all things film! That means specializing in industry news, emerging directors, and stand-out projects.

Million Dollar Baby was certainly not the first movie depicting a jaded, veteran boxer teaching an unlikely, underdog protagonist the ropes of fighting. It was, however, one of the more memorable renditions of the classic trope. The iconic 2004 sports drama stars Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, and Hilary Swank has effortlessly withstood the test of time, remaining a cultural touchstone nearly 30 years after its initial theatrical release. Moreover, despite the later successes of Eastwood’s career, including films like Unforgiven, Mystic River, and other lesser-known titles, none have struck such a resounding chord as Million Dollar Baby.

For those who haven’t seen this legendary film, the premise is pretty simple. The film follows Maggie Fitzgerald (Swank), an amateur boxer with lofty dreams of becoming a true professional. The 31-year-old down-and-out waitress convinces a reluctant vet boxer, Frankie Dunn (Eastwood), to help her along, who, despite his initial doubt, is impressed by her unyielding grit and fortitude. Additionally, Dunn’s close friend, Eddie “Scrap Iron” Dupris (Freeman), serves as a more tender-hearted elder, giving Maggie advice and support as she encounters various obstacles. As is true with many films of the genre, over time their bond resembles that of a surrogate father-daughter relationship, giving this gritty film a beautifully grounding foundation of real humanity.

Why is Clint Eastwood’s ‘Million Dollar Baby’ Considered a Classic?

Along with being considered a true must-watch, the film was particularly revered for its emotional weightiness and Eastwood’s careful directorial choices. Critics and audiences alike appeared to be struck by the emotional weight of the film, perhaps due in part to the lack of it in other films of the same genre. Because of the cast’s exquisite performances, the audience is allowed to look at these characters through a lense they wouldn’t typically be able to. It feels that each of them lives a very full life off camera. On top of its positive reception, it’s also quite heavily awarded. Million Dollar Baby won a total of 4 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Hilary Swank), and Best Supporting Actor (Morgan Freeman).

Something that moves the strong along particularly well is Freeman’s narration. Thus, in some way, the film is expressed through his very loving yet very true perspective. Through him, each character is introduced slowly, building a real attachment to the audience. Maggiie Fitzgerald is raw, unfiltered and relentless. Her fight scenes appear dangerous, gritty, and again very raw. Frankie is at first cantankerous and unpredictable, which makes his later softening all the more rewarding. And of course, as he always seems to be, Freeman embodies this deep wisdom and intelligence, the kind that can only be gained from truly living. The culmination of all of this makes the controversial twist all the more stirring, and in some ways defines the movie’s impact as a whole.

Million Dollar Baby is Clint Eastwood’s 25th film. It’s also the film people seem to remember the most. It defined the sports-drama genre, and still today, nearly 30 years later, lives in infamy as more than just a cheap tear-jerker. In terms of technicalities, the 2004 film is widely considered to be one of the best performing box-office movies of all time. With a budget of 30 million dollars, it earned back a shocking 216 million dollars worldwide. Undoubtedly, this well-loved film will continue to serve as proof that real, gritty, characters will keep an audience hooked.
