EAST HARTFORD — The sound in the stadium drained out all at once.
UConn wide receiver Javon Brown lay motionless in the end zone, and the 10 teammates who were just running with him a few seconds earlier simply stopped near midfield.
Helmets came off. Knees hit the grass, one after another, until virtually every player on the field — Syracuse included — watched silently as Brown was carted off the field on a stretcher.

Some stared at the ground. Some closed their eyes in prayer. A few wiped tears off their faces, not knowing what had just happened.
After fighting for a ball thrown at him in the end zone, Brown came down and never got back up. What happened after made the moment harder to forget.
When play resumed, UConn, down 14 in the third quarter, rallied after Brown’s injury but fell just short in a 42-41 overtime loss to the Orange. Coach Jason Candle didn’t have an update on Brown after the game but said he was proud of the way his guys fought through an emotional moment to try to win the game for Brown.
“I got third-and-10, and we got guys in tears in the huddle,” Candle said. “They’re worrying about their brother and worrying about him being okay, and we got to go get a first down. It’s part of it, that’s the emotion of what we do. Javon’s in good hands, and that’s a tough thing to go through. But you know, credit to them. Once that cleared out, and that situation was where it needed to be, our guys kept fighting and kept playing. They played until the very last second.”
Before Brown’s injury, the Huskies were not playing well. The offense couldn’t move the ball. The defense couldn’t stop anyone. Even special teams had difficulties, missing a field goal and an extra-point try.
The dagger felt like it came early in the third quarter.
Up 13 points and facing a fourth-and-23, Syracuse decided to go for it. The play call looked crazy until quarterback Amari Odom threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Daunte Bacheyie to put the Orange up 20.
At that point, the game felt over. The student section slowly started to get thinner. The energy in the crowd started to fade, even when UConn scored quickly to cut the Orange’s lead back down to 14.
Then Brown went down, and the game stopped being a game.

UConn falls short in overtime to Syracuse: Grading Huskies’ loss
The score was 34-20 with minutes remaining in the third when Brown was carted off the field. From then on, nothing about the afternoon felt the same. The Huskies moved like players who had been given a reason.
UConn played with a sense of urgency on both sides of the ball.
On the same possession that Brown got hurt, quarterback Kalieb Osborne threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Watson to cut the lead to seven. On the next drive, running back Cyncir Bowers broke free in the middle of Syracuse’s defense to score a 71-yard touchdown to tie the game at 34.
UConn briefly took the lead in overtime when Osborne hit Trey Cornist for a 25-yard touchdown pass. But Syracuse scored on its overtime possession, then converted the two-point conversion to win the game.
The loss was heartbreaking, but it was Brown’s injury that gave the Huskies purpose to try and snatch a win from the jaws of defeat.

“We just see how we all can come together and play for one another from that,” Osborne said. “Seeing (Javon) down, he’s a big aspect to our team, and we love him dearly. It was hard to see him go down.”
For a few minutes that afternoon, UConn’s brotherhood knelt at midfield, helmets off, waiting. The rest of the day, it played.
“We got a brotherhood we built here throughout the fall and winter,” Osborne said. “So we just know to come together, strive for one another and just play our heart out for one another, and that’s all we did.”
The Huskies left Rentschler Field without a win and without an update on their teammate. What they had was the knowledge that they gave everything, with Brown on their minds until the final snap.
