Jesse Marsch believes Canada’s 2-0 victory over Peru proved they can beat “just about anybody” and views their upcoming clash with the United States as a yardstick to measure their progress.
A first-half brace from Los Angeles FC’s Jacob Shaffelburg sealed a deserved victory for the hosts in Montreal, maintaining their 100% record in this international break.
Canada, who also defeated Chile 1-0 in their previous game, fired off 17 shots to Peru’s four and won the expected goals (xG) battle by 1.94 to 0.23, creating four Opta-defined big chances, compared to their opponent’s zero.
Marsch will now go up against his home country, as Canada prepare to face the USA in their final friendly of this international break, in Minnesota on Tuesday.
And he feels that game will be a valuable test, telling reporters after full-time: “I thought we dictated the pace and the way the game was played from the beginning.
“We feel like we could have come away with even more goals.
“We’ll keep working on things, we’ll keep trying to capitalise on moments and now, when we go to play the U.S. down there, we know we’ll face an opponent that has a lot of quality, that is athletic, with a good coach and a good way of playing.
“It’ll be a big challenge for us, but we feel confident against any opponent that we play, and if we dictate the terms of the match and control the game the way we like to control it, we feel we can beat just about anybody.”
Marsch also highlighted Peru’s recent results – including a 1-1 draw with Mexico earlier this week – as further evidence of the quality of Canada’s latest performance.
Peru were also competitive against eventual World Cup winners Spain in a pre-tournament friendly in June, losing 3-1, though they went down 4-1 to the USA at the start of this international break.
“It’s a credit to the team and a credit to what we’re establishing here that we can manage that, because that’s a team that gave Mexico a very good match,” Marsch said.
“Even if you go back to when they played Spain over the summer, they gave Spain a really good match.
“We made them look worse than they are, because of how we performed.”
