Dan Patrick tried to turn Lionel Messi and Eli Manning into a career debate, but soccer fans were not willing to treat the comparison as a serious one.

The question came during a World Cup week in which Messi had just reminded viewers why his career is viewed on a completely different scale.

Argentina’s captain scored a hat-trick against Algeria, pushing his World Cup total to 16 goals and adding another layer to a resume already built around the sport’s biggest trophies. That made the Manning comparison land badly online.

Dan Patrick asks fans to choose Lionel Messi or Eli Manning

The Dan Patrick Show posted the question on X, asking followers to pick between two very different careers.

The post read: “Whose career would you want: Eli Manning or Lionel Messi?”

Manning’s career is respected for clear reasons. He won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants, earned MVP honors in both games and built his NFL legacy around two famous postseason runs against Tom Brady’s New England Patriots.

Messi’s career sits in another kind of conversation. He has won a World Cup, multiple Copa America titles, four Champions League trophies and a record eight Ballon d’Or awards, while spending much of his career at the center of the greatest-player-ever debate in the world’s most popular sport.

The comparison was framed as a hypothetical, but fans saw it as uneven. Manning is a Giants legend and a two-time Super Bowl hero, while Messi is one of the defining athletes in modern sports history.

The reaction was furious, with many fans arguing that the question should never have been asked because the gap in global status and individual achievement is too wide.

One fan wrote, “This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen.” Another begged the show to take it down, saying, “Remove this post, please, y’all should not even entertain this question, please.”

Others were more direct about the names involved. One response read, “Don’t ever put Eli Manning and Lionel Messi in the same conversation.” Another added, “My god, that might be the stupidest question I’ve ever heard.”

The anger came from the feeling that Messi’s career does not need an American football comparison to be understood. His trophies, records and global reach already place him in a rare sporting tier.

Manning’s resume deserves respect, especially in New York and across the NFL. But the reaction showed how quickly soccer fans will push back when Messi is placed into a debate they believe should not exist.
