A year ago, the Dallas Cowboys‘ defense was an absolute liability, surrendering a staggering 30.1 points per game and costing defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus his job. While the offense did its part by ranking near the top of the league, the defense failed to play a lick of situational football. 

Looking to spark a total identity shift, Dallas spent the offseason hiring 34-year-old Christian Parker to install a fiery, Vic Fangio-based defensive scheme. Through OTAs and mandatory minicamp, a noticeable shift has taken over the facility and it is exactly the kind of competitive edge Jerry Jones has been searching for.

At the center of this transformation is obviously Parker, who has not only installed a brand-new playbook but is also actively talking trash to the offense while doing it.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed it, admitting he is facing a hard time cracking the defense that Parker installed. “I would say the shit-talking from Christian Parker is a little different than what we had last year,” Schottenheimer said, per Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys’ official website. 

“The guys feed off of it in a good way. It’s been fun to watch him stir up CeeDee [Lamb], George [Pickens] and Dak, and I think we are in a really good spot,” he added. 

Under Eberflus, the defense was predictable, and opponents picked it apart. Parker changed that by using disguised coverages and complex pre-snap looks that force the offense to earn every yard. 

The unit has a completely different attitude now. The best evidence of that came from Lamb himself, who did not mince words when asked about preparing against Parker’s unit during OTAs.

“It’s annoying,” Lamb told Jon Machota of The Athletic. “It’s been annoying to prepare against. It’s very tricky, but as an offense, we’ve just got to play fast and get to our spots.”

Jones built this franchise on the idea that winning the offseason sets up a deep January run. Through minicamp, his new defensive coordinator is already making life uncomfortable for an offense that used to be untouchable. That is exactly what Jones paid for.
