Ohio State is heading into one of its biggest games of the season with plenty to prove. After suffering a disappointing loss to USC, the Buckeyes will return home Saturday to face Oregon in a matchup that could have major College Football Playoff implications.
The Buckeyes entered the season with national championship expectations, but their recent struggles have created questions about whether they can live up to those expectations. Now sitting at 6-2 and ranked No. 11, Ohio State needs a strong response against a dangerous Oregon team.
Ohio State Needs an Offensive Response
One of the biggest concerns heading into Saturday is the quarterback situation. Starting quarterback Julian Sayin is expected to miss the game after suffering an injury, leaving true freshman Luke Fahey in line for another start.
Fahey completed 21 of 38 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown in his first career start against USC. However, the Buckeyes struggled to finish drives, scoring only one offensive touchdown.
Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith will be especially important. The star receiver has already recorded 1,067 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns this season. Ohio State needs to find ways to get him involved early and consistently.
Head coach Ryan Day will also need to make adjustments to help the young quarterback succeed.
Oregon Presents Another Major Challenge
Oregon enters the matchup at 5-3 after defeating Northwestern 34-26. Quarterback Dylan Raiola has provided a spark since taking over, throwing for 336 yards and three touchdowns in the victory.
Head coach Dan Lanning has the Ducks playing with renewed confidence, and they will be looking to take advantage of Ohio State’s recent struggles.
Saturday’s matchup is an opportunity for the Buckeyes to remind everyone why they entered the season as national championship contenders. With the game taking place in Columbus, Ohio State will have its home crowd behind it.
A victory would go a long way toward restoring confidence and keeping its playoff hopes alive.
