Netflix Officially Adapting Forgotten Bestselling Series After 20-Year Wait

Growing up around performers, storytelling was always central to Emma’s life. Add in a nerdy older brother who introduced her to Marvel at far too young an age, and her love for entertainment led her to pursue a Journalism degree at Indiana University, where she discovered her passion for entertainment reporting. She spent nearly one year in Los Angeles covering industry stories and fully immersing herself in the world of entertainment media.

Netflix is finally moving forward with a young adult drama from the creator of the television series One Day.

Based on Curtis Sittenfeld’s bestselling 2005 novel, Prep follows Lee Fiora, a scholarship student attending a prestigious New England boarding school. The coming-of-age story explores Lee’s struggles with friendships, romance, and class differences as she attempts to fit in among her wealthy classmates. The project comes more than two decades after the novel’s publication and a previous attempt to adapt the story for television.

Deadline now reports that Netflix has officially given Prep a straight-to-series order, with One Day creator Nicole Taylor attached as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Alix Taylor will also executive produce through Gloria Sanchez Productions, alongside Sittenfeld. The half-hour drama is expected to open its writers’ room in January 2027. Taylor, who has been hoping to adapt the novel for 20 years, shared her excitement about the announcement:

“Prep is my all time favourite novel and I have longed to adapt it for the entire twenty years since I first read it and found myself reflected uncannily back.”

The project marks Taylor’s latest Netflix adaptation following the success of One Day, which premiered in 2024. Based on David Nicholls’ bestselling novel, the romantic drama starred Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod as Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley, whose complicated relationship unfolds over two decades. One Day earned a 92% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes from 49 reviews, alongside an 85% audience score. The series received praise for its performances and emotional storytelling, giving Taylor another successful book adaptation ahead of Prep.

However, this isn’t the first time Prep has been considered for a television adaptation. In 2016, HBO began developing a comedy series based on Sittenfeld’s novel, with 30 Rock writer Colleen McGuinness and Game of Thrones executive producer Carolyn Strauss attached. The project ultimately never moved forward.

Sittenfeld’s debut novel became a hit after its 2005 publication, spending weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. The story was partly inspired by the author’s own experiences attending boarding school and explores themes of privilege, insecurity, and social status. She has since written several other novels, including Romantic Comedy, which New Line Cinema and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine are also developing into a movie.

Prep joins the streaming platform’s growing lineup of teen dramas, including Outer Banks and My Life with the Walter Boys

With young adult titles generating over 10.4 billion global views on Netflix since the first half of 2023, the streamer continues to expand its YA lineup with upcoming series including The Body, The Sticks, and Poser.

Netflix has not announced any cast members or a release date for Prep.
