The moment college football fans have been waiting for has arrived. The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2026 season are set to be revealed Tuesday night, giving teams their first official look at where they stand in the race for a national championship.
The selection committee will release its initial top 25 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. While the AP Poll has provided a weekly picture of the country’s best teams, these rankings carry much more importance because they come directly from the committee responsible for selecting the 12 playoff participants.
Miami Could Take the No. 1 Spot
Miami enters the rankings as the leading candidate for the top position. The Hurricanes are undefeated at 8-0 and have built one of the strongest résumés in the country.
Georgia, Utah and Kentucky are also expected to receive plenty of attention near the top. Georgia has an impressive victory over Alabama, while undefeated Utah has continued to climb the national rankings. Kentucky has also surprised people with a 7-1 record and several important victories.
UCLA is another major storyline. The Bruins are undefeated at 8-0, but questions about their strength of schedule could influence where the committee places them.
The Playoff Picture Is Far From Settled
The first rankings are important, but they are not the final word. Teams still have several weeks to improve their résumés, earn statement victories and move up the standings.
This year’s 12-team format also gives conference champions an important path into the playoff, making the Mountain West and other Group of Six races especially interesting.
With major matchups approaching and plenty of contenders still fighting for position, Tuesday night’s rankings will provide the first real look at how the committee views the national championship race.
The debate is about to begin, and some fan bases will undoubtedly be happier than others.
