Tarik Skubal is the talk of this year’s trade deadline, and with the deadline less than a week away, rumors are heating up.
The Tigers blew a seven-run lead to lose Wednesday’s game with Skubal on the mound. Every loss puts them a little further away from the postseason, and trading Skubal becomes more likely. The Tigers have not reportedly started shopping Skubal yet, but trading him makes a ton of sense. He is about to be a free agent, the Tigers making the postseason is not a guarantee and there is no chance the Tigers can afford to pay him.
The Tigers could get a haul of prospects for Skubal even though he is a rental. However, many insiders believe that if they do trade him, they will want a big-league pitcher in return so they can stay competitive this year as well. MLB insider Jim Bowden ranked his most likely landing spots on “Foul Territory” on Wednesday.
“I’m being told (the Brewers) are in on Skubal. If he’s traded, which I don’t know. Scott Harris doesn’t know. I don’t know if he’s going to be traded, but if he is, I will tell you this right now: I think the Brewers are the most likely landing spot. I’ll write them one, Dodgers two, (Atlanta) Braves three, (Tampa Bay) Rays four in that order.”

The Brewers are not the type of team that usually goes after players like Skubal. In fact, it’s more of the Dodgers’ style. However, the Brewers must sense they are one piece away, and after being swept by the Dodgers in last year’s National League Championship Series, they likely feel pressure to make a move.
At the very least, the Brewers may just want to ensure Skubal does not end up in Los Angeles. They have a very deep farm system and have enough depth in the big leagues to provide the Tigers with a big league arm if that’s what they want.
