Texas football could soon get its best defensive player back on the field after a one-game absence.
Colin Simmons, the SEC’s sack leader this season, missed Texas’ 34-27 win over Ole Miss on Saturday due to a right-ankle sprain. The injury may only keep him sidelined one week, as Simmons was listed as questionable on Wednesday’s availability report for Texas’ upcoming game against Mississippi State.
Simmons’ potential return is welcome news for Texas’ defense. The Longhorns also received positive injury news Wednesday regarding three offensive players.
Running back Hollywood Smothers is probable for Saturday night’s matchup after missing the Ole Miss game due to a shoulder injury. Wide receivers Kaliq Lockett and Cam Coleman are also probable. Lockett didn’t play against Ole Miss, while Coleman exited the Ole Miss game due to a shoulder injury in the third quarter.

Texas’ weaponry will be healthy vs. Mississippi State. It could have a near-full pass-rush unit. The Longhorns will still be without one key piece in the trenches, with left tackle Trevor Goosby ruled out for Saturday. Goosby was carted off the field in last week’s win over Ole Miss due to a left-knee injury in the first quarter, and he did not return to the game.
Goosby underwent surgery on his torn left patellar tendon on Tuesday, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Texas enters Saturday’s game eyeing a second straight SEC win after back-to-back classes. Kickoff at Royal-Memorial Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
