The volleyball regular season wrapped up for local teams this week. Plus, the final Clatsop Clash of the soccer season took place on Tuesday, with Astoria coming out on top. Here is a roundup of the wrap ups.
Astoria volleyball flies to the playoffs
Next stop for the Astoria volleyball team is a first-round playoff matchup with Cascade.
The girls officially clinched second place in the Cowapa League after defeating Scappoose in straight sets 25-10, 25-13 and 26-24. Astoria finished its regular season ranked No. 10 in 4A and 12-8 overall, with a 7-3 league record.
With senior night happening on Monday at The Brickhouse, anticipation was in the air.
The Fishermen honored their four seniors: Hadley Painter, Lyla Carlson, Kendal Ewing and Keturah Jackson before the game. With the student section decked out in pink, the Lady Fishermen went to work in the first set.
After Scappoose won the first point, Astoria won the next 11 behind great serving from Painter. The senior won 10 consecutive points on her serve to give Astoria a commanding 11-1 lead. And as always, Kyah Gohr was dominating the competition early with thunderous kills. The Fishermen overwhelmed the Indians by a score of 25-10 in the opening set.
Set two was a little closer as Scappoose started to play themselves into the match. The Indians came in playing good volleyball as they had beaten both Tillamook and Banks in the last week to move up to No. 15 in the 4A rankings. Though the Indians stepped up their defensive intensity, the Fishermen were still able to take set two, 25-15.
The third and final set was a grind for Astoria. With Scappoose needing to win the match to keep its season alive, the Indians gave everything. Despite Astoria having a five-point lead midway through the third set, Scappoose fought back to tie things at 24-24. The veteran Fishermen found a way to win the next two points and cap off senior night with an impressive sweep.
Head Coach Eric Gohr said it’s sometimes difficult to perform well on senior night given all the emotion so he was pleased to see the girls beat a pretty good Scappoose team in three sets.
Next up for Astoria is round one of the 2026 OSAA/On Point Community Credit Union 4A Girls Volleyball State Championship. The Fishermen are the 11th seed and have a difficult matchup with sixth-seeded Cascade.
The Cougars handled Astoria easily back on Sept. 15. Astoria took the first set, but Cascade thoroughly outplayed them over the last three. Coach Gohr said if there is a weakness with his team it’s short, quick, defensive teams. This is exactly what makes Cascade so tough.
However, the Fishermen have the ultimate cheat code with the University of Washington bound Gohr. If she’s rolling and the Fishermen defense continues playing like they are now, the girls will have a chance against any team not named Valley Catholic or Marist Catholic. That match is scheduled to begin Saturday, Oct. 31. The winner of that game will officially reach the state tournament in North Bend on Nov. 6.
Warrenton girls fall short
Everything was looking up for the Warrenton Warriors on Friday afternoon.
A packed gym, a rowdy student section — and the young Warriors looked to be in control. But everything came crashing down quickly.
After winning the first two sets against league opponent Corbett, the Warriors’ freshman-heavy team finally caught up to them. The Warriors let a 21-18 third set lead slip away and ended up being reverse swept by the Cardinals. Corbett’s 17-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-7 and 15-10 victory shocked the Warriors and was enough to get them into the 3A State Playoffs as the 13th seed.
For a Warriors team that fielded eight freshmen and just two seniors, this is the type of game that will help them grow as a program. It’s difficult for any team to be successful with eight freshmen, so the fact Warrenton was on the cusp of a playoff berth is something the program should take as a positive moving into next season.
Warrenton finished the season 14-9 and No. 17 in the final OSAA 3A rankings.
Astoria boys soccer victorious
It was a perfect senior night for Orrick Evans and the Astoria boys soccer team.
A 48th-minute goal by Orrick Evans was the difference Tuesday as the Fishermen topped their rival.
After falling 1-0 to Seaside in the first round, Astoria reversed things. A scoreless first half was followed by the Fishermen opening up the second strong. Evans banged home a goal off a deflection to give the Fishermen a 1-0 lead.
Though the Fishermen had the better of play for much of the game, Seaside started to press hard over the last 20 minutes. The Seagulls didn’t go down without a fight. They brought more men forward and ended up creating a few chances. But the Fishermen defense anchored by seniors Connor Johnston, Parker Nong, Dominic Rico and freshman Flint Goin held up under pressure from Seaside. Senior goalkeeper Edwin Juarez-Rosas came up with a save to keep the Seagulls off the scoresheet.
The Fishermen were inspired by a rowdy student section. As the match was winding down, the Fishermen cheering section started belting out the popular “TEAM USA I believe that we will win” chant. As the final whistle sounded, the Fishermen ran onto the field in celebration.
Though this was only the third win of the year for Astoria, beating Seaside is always going to make a season that much sweeter. In total the Fishermen now sit at 3-10-1 and 2-7 in league. Astoria has one more game left on the season. The 2026 finale will be played at CMH Field against Scappoose at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29. For Seaside, this dropped their record to 3-10-1 overall and 1-8 in league.
Astoria girls soccer cruises
The Astoria girls made it a perfect night at CMH Field for their soccer program as they cruised to a 4-0 victory over Seaside.
Senior forward Roberta Chavez put on a show on senior night as she scored a hat trick in 54 minutes of action. Chavez scored goals in the 15th, 31st and 54th minutes and freshman Ravyn Hano added her own goal in the 56th minute to cap off a dominant performance for the Fishermen.
Though the Fishermen won 4-0, this game could have been a lot worse as Astoria had three shots go off the upper cross bar in the second half.
The win all but assures Astoria will be in the postseason as they are third place in the Cowapa League behind Scappoose and Banks, while also being ranked No. 15. Currently the girls are 7-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in league. One final road game against 4A No. 2 Scappoose will wrap up the Fishermen’s regular season. That game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29.
