The Hurricanes are off to a dominant 3-0 start this season, defeating Stanford in Palo Alto 45-6, Florida A&M 77-7, and Wake Forest 33-20. Miami looks primed to make another deep run in the College Football Playoff behind the play of Duke transfer quarterback Darian Mensah, who has been fantastic all season so far for the Hurricanes. Against Wake Forest, Mensah connected on 30 of 34 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns, while star wide receiver Malachi Toney caught 12 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Mark Fletcher Jr. rushed the ball 16 times in the win for 85 yards and a score on the ground.
This season, Mensah has just eight incompletions on 79 pass attempts for 873 yards and 11 touchdowns to zero interceptions. The only thing that might hurt Mensah’s Heisman campaign is splitting votes with his own teammate, Toney, and Miami’s level of competition this season, which isn’t the highest. Toney has 28 catches this season for 444 yards and five touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Central Michigan is 2-1 this season, falling 38-7 to New Mexico, defeating Colgate 13-10 and defeating Wyoming 24-10. In the win over Wyoming, dual-threat quarterback Angel Flores completed four of seven passes for 32 yards, while rushing 28 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns.
Miami will need to hone in on slowing down Central Michigan’s rushing attack, led by Flores, to win on Saturday.
