Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, has officially assumed office as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
Ogundipe was formally inaugurated on Friday at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, where he received his letter of appointment, marking the commencement of his tenure as chairman of the commission’s governing board.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had appointed Ogundipe to the position on June 22, following the resignation of Emeritus Professor Olufemi Aina, who stepped down less than a year after assuming office.
Speaking after the inauguration, Ogundipe expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to contribute to the advancement of Nigeria’s university education system.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page, the former UNILAG vice-chancellor described the appointment as a privilege and promised to discharge his responsibilities with dedication.
“Today, with deep gratitude and a sober sense of duty, I was formally inaugurated as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission,” he said.
He added, “I want to thank the President for this honour and the opportunity to serve once again. I do not take this for granted in any way. I also acknowledge Emeritus Professor Aina, whose service laid the ground we will build upon in this commission.”
Ogundipe stated that one of his major priorities would be to strengthen Nigeria’s university system and ensure that degrees awarded by Nigerian universities are globally competitive, reaffirming his commitment to improving the quality and international recognition of higher education in the country.
