Kwara approves promotion of 5,956 SUBEB staff

ILORIN, NIGERIA – Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has approved the promotion of 5,956 teaching and non-teaching staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), with the financial benefits scheduled to take effect from October 2026.

The approval followed a computer-based test conducted earlier in October for eligible employees as part of the board’s promotion exercise.

The Executive Chairman of Kwara SUBEB, Raheem Adaramaja, disclosed the development, adding that the affected workers would receive their promotion letters through education secretaries in their respective local government areas.

Adaramaja said the exercise was part of the state government’s efforts to improve staff welfare and strengthen service delivery in public basic schools.

SUBEB oversees the implementation of basic education programmes in public primary and junior secondary schools across Kwara State.

Government Highlights Teachers’ Welfare Measures

Adaramaja said the state government had consistently implemented teachers’ promotions since 2017, alongside other measures intended to improve their welfare and professional development.

He listed the prompt payment of monthly salaries, regular training and retraining of teachers, and approval of the 27.5 per cent Teachers Specific Allowance (TSA) among the measures introduced by the administration.

“Let me put it on record that apart from prompt payment of monthly salaries, regular training and re-training of teachers, and approval of the implementation of 27.5% Teachers Specific Allowance (TSA), Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has consistently implemented promotion of teachers from 2017 to date,” the statement quoted him as saying.

The chairman said the latest approval demonstrated the government’s continued commitment to staff career progression within the public basic education system.

Promotion exercises provide opportunities for eligible employees to advance in their careers, while associated financial benefits form part of their employment entitlements.

SUBEB Says Inherited Promotion Arrears Addressed

Adaramaja also said the state government had addressed promotion arrears inherited from the previous administration.

He said the arrears were among the outstanding financial obligations the government had worked to settle, although the statement did not provide a detailed breakdown of the payments.

“This includes the arrears of SUBEB staff promotions inherited from the previous administration. The Governor has long settled 345% of salary arrears accrued from instalment payments inherited from the past administration,” he said.

The figure cited by the chairman was not accompanied by further details explaining how the 345 per cent was calculated or the specific categories of arrears covered.

The chairman’s remarks placed the new promotion approval within the government’s broader account of measures taken to address staff welfare and outstanding employment-related obligations.

Government Links Staff Welfare to Learning Outcomes

Adaramaja said the government was pursuing improvements in public basic education within available resources, adding that teachers’ welfare was important to pupils’ academic performance.

“The government is taking every step within available resources to drive efficient performance of students in public basic schools. This is partly achievable when their teachers are well taken care of,” he said.

He thanked AbdulRazaq for approving the 2026 computer-based promotion exercise and providing other forms of support to the board.

The latest approval affects 5,956 teaching and non-teaching employees, with financial benefits due to commence in October 2026.

The distribution of promotion letters through local government education secretaries is expected to inform the affected staff of their new status.

The exercise comes amid ongoing efforts by state education authorities to support public basic schools through staff development, improved welfare and administrative measures.

The extent to which these interventions translate into better classroom conditions and learning outcomes will depend on their implementation alongside other education support measures.
