Marvel Unveils New Nick Fury For The Hero's Next Major Appearance

Nick Fury is officially replaced in Marvel‘s next thriller. Bryan Hitch and Mark Millar revolutionized Nick Fury in 2002 with the Ultimate Universe iteration of the SHIELD director, directly modeled after Samuel L. Jackson’s likeness. Only six years later, Samuel L. Jackson himself brought the character to live-action in Iron Man‘s post-credits scene, which marked the moment Fury became the connective tissue for the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 1. Since then, Jackson’s Nick Fury has become the definitive version of the secret agent across every medium and continuity.

However, recent releases across both comics and live-action have sidelined both Nick Fury and SHIELD altogether. Following the collapse of SHIELD, the MCU replaced the organization with off-world ventures like SWORD and SABER, while Fury fully retired to space in the wake of his failures facing the Skrulls in Secret Invasion. Likewise, in the comics, Secret Empire led the Department of Damage Control to step in and fill the global security vacuum before Fury Jr. brought SHIELD back as a much smaller, underground, and clandestine tactical unit.

While his son manages ground-level espionage on Earth, the original Nick Fury Sr. has spent the last decade away from global intelligence. This is about to change thanks to Marvel’s Armageddon event.

Nick Fury Sr Takes The Spotlight In Immortal Soldiers

After a prolonged absence from Earth, Nick Fury Sr. finally returns to action to orchestrate a secretive post-war defense strategy. Following the detonation of a nuclear bomb over Pletetsk, Fury Sr. arrives at ground zero to retrieve Bucky Barnes’ corpse, but he finds an almost fully healed Bucky recovering from his wounds in Avengers: Armageddon . Now, Chip Zdarsky and Christian Rosado’s Immortal Soldiers one-shot comic follows Nick Fury Sr and Bucky Barnes as they face the aftermath of Red Hulk’s global takeover attempt separately from the Avengers.

At the end of Avengers: Armageddon , Nick Fury Sr. recruits Bucky Barnes with the line, “now pull yourself together, soldier. You and me…? We gotta save the damn world.” The main cover for Immortal Soldiers features both anti-heroes in a very similar pose, only with Fury standin above Bucky’s grave, and Bucky sticking his metallic arm out of the ground. Mark Chiarello’s variant cover features Nick Fury wearing a SHIELD trenchcoat with a skull replacing his head, which is especially sinister imagery considering SHIELD and Bucky’s history with the Red Skull.

After his death and unexplained return, Bucky Barnes discards his traditional Winter Soldier gear for a brand-new costume, featuring a black and red motorcycle jacket with a red star on its back, high-tech red sunglasses, and slicked back hair. Nick Fury Sr. returns with his classic dark blue SHIELD uniform, plus a brown trenchcoat. After the events of Armageddon, Bucky Barnes may no longer be an Avenger, and Nick Fury Sr. may become a long-running rival to his own son. And following their Immortal Soldiers one-shot, Fury Jr. and Bucky may recruit more former Avengers allies into their ranks.

Besides Bucky Barnes and Nick Fury Jr., Armageddon‘s crisis inevitably leads to several changes to the superhero community. Avengers: Armageddon teases Mephisto’s arrival as the Avengers’ next main antagonist through Iron Man’s vision of a dark future where the demon lord has claimed Spider-Man’s life. Meanwhile, Captain Marvel is left to come to terms with the vast reduction of her powers following her attempt to absorb a nuclear explosion, while David Colton’s Miracleman takes over as Earth-616’s most powerful superhero.
