Ogun police arrest three students over suspected cult initiation

OGUN, NIGERIA – The Ogun State Police Command has arrested three secondary school students during a suspected cult initiation in Owode-Yewa, following an intelligence report about a planned gathering involving students from different schools in the area.

The suspects, comprising a 12-year-old and two 18-year-olds, were arrested on Thursday, October 22, 2026, during an operation conducted by police detectives in collaboration with members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria.

The police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed the development to journalists on Friday, saying the operation followed information about a planned cult-related activity tagged “Kito Day”.

According to Babaseyi, the Divisional Police Officer in Owode-Yewa deployed detectives to the location after receiving intelligence about the planned gathering.

Police Recover Weapons, Other Items

Babaseyi said the operation led to the arrest of the three students and the recovery of several items suspected to be connected to the planned activity.

“The Ogun State Police Command has foiled a suspected cult initiation in Owode-Yewa, arresting three students aged 12, 18 and 18 following timely intelligence about a planned cult-related activity tagged ‘Kito Day’ involving students from different secondary schools in the area,” he said.

He added that the operation was carried out after the divisional police officer received information on October 22, 2026.

The items recovered from the scene included one English axe, two knives, one short cutlass, one rubber toy gun and a school bag.

The police did not provide further details about the identities of the suspects or the specific secondary schools they attend.

Case to Be Transferred for Further Investigation

The police spokesperson said the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, on Friday for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The transfer is expected to allow investigators to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged gathering and determine the roles, if any, played by the arrested students.

The command did not disclose whether other individuals were being sought in connection with the incident or whether additional arrests were anticipated.

The arrest comes amid concerns about suspected cult-related activities involving young people in schools and communities. However, the circumstances of the Owode-Yewa incident remain subject to police investigation.

The suspects’ alleged involvement has not been established in court, and the investigation is expected to determine the facts surrounding the planned “Kito Day” gathering and the items recovered during the operation.
