Anthony Hopkins can still make your skin crawl without charging you a penny. The Silence of the Lambs, one of the greatest psychological thrillers ever made, is currently available to stream for free, alongside an unexpectedly impressive collection of Hitchcock classics, modern crime dramas, and some of Hollywood’s most unforgettable mysteries.
With subscription prices continuing to rise, finding a genuinely great movie without another monthly fee feels like a small victory. Fortunately, free streaming services have become surprisingly competitive, with Tubi and Pluto TV offering acclaimed films that wouldn’t look out of place in Netflix’s most-watched rankings.
There’s also Kanopy, an often-overlooked streaming service accessible through participating public libraries and universities. Its catalog includes independent cinema and international films, making it particularly appealing to viewers seeking something beyond the usual Hollywood offerings. Availability depends on individual libraries, but there’s plenty worth investigating.
Of course, having thousands of movies available doesn’t necessarily make choosing one any easier. The best thrillers demand your attention from the opening scene, whether through Hitchcock’s elaborate misdirection or the psychological manipulation that defines many near-perfect ’90s thrillers.
These 10 movies represent some of the finest suspense filmmaking across nearly seven decades. All are currently available to watch legally for free in the United States, although Tubi and Pluto TV include advertisements, while Kanopy requires access through a participating library. Streaming catalogs change regularly, so it’s worth taking advantage of these excellent selections while they’re available.

Anthony Hopkins needed remarkably little screen time to create one of cinema’s most terrifying villains. In Jonathan Demme’s 1991 psychological thriller, Jodie Foster plays FBI trainee Clarice Starling, who seeks the assistance of incarcerated psychiatrist and cannibal Hannibal Lecter to identify a serial killer. Their conversations become increasingly disturbing as Lecter demonstrates an extraordinary ability to exploit other people’s psychological vulnerabilities.
The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and remains an astonishing example of how suspense can develop through dialogue rather than violence. Foster’s vulnerability contrasts beautifully with Hopkins’ calculated composure, making their encounters almost unbearably tense. As explored in why The Silence of the Lambs has aged so remarkably well, its psychological complexity remains every bit as compelling today. Finding a masterpiece of this caliber available for free is almost ridiculous.
Shutter Island

Martin Scorsese reunited with Leonardo DiCaprio for 2010’s Shutter Island, a psychological thriller that begins with a relatively straightforward mystery. U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels arrives at a remote psychiatric hospital to investigate the disappearance of a patient, accompanied by his new partner, Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo). Unfortunately, the isolated institution seems to be concealing considerably more than one missing woman.
Scorsese fills the movie with ominous imagery and increasingly unsettling encounters, creating an atmosphere in which even the protagonist’s perceptions become unreliable. DiCaprio delivers a terrific performance as a man struggling to distinguish genuine threats from his own suspicions. The film’s intricate relationship between psychological horror and suspense makes it particularly rewarding to revisit. For anyone unfamiliar with its revelations, Shutter Island is best approached with as little advance knowledge as possible.

David Fincher’s Zodiac follows the investigation into the notorious serial killer who terrorized Northern California during the late 1960s and 1970s. Jake Gyllenhaal plays newspaper cartoonist Robert Graysmith, whose fascination with the unsolved crimes gradually becomes an all-consuming obsession. Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. deliver equally compelling performances as detective Dave Toschi and journalist Paul Avery.
Released in 2007, Zodiac rejects the convenient resolutions audiences usually expect from serial killer thrillers. Fincher instead examines the frustration of pursuing a mystery that refuses to provide satisfactory answers. The film’s meticulous attention to detail creates extraordinary tension, particularly during its deeply unsettling basement sequence. There’s a strong argument that Zodiac is David Fincher’s greatest movie, and its availability on Pluto TV makes revisiting that argument unusually affordable.

Before Christopher Nolan became synonymous with enormous science fiction blockbusters, he directed one of the most inventive psychological thrillers of the 21st century. Released in 2000, Memento stars Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, a man suffering from anterograde amnesia who cannot form new long-term memories. Determined to find his wife’s killer, Leonard relies on photographs, handwritten notes, and tattoos to preserve information.
Nolan’s extraordinary narrative structure places audiences inside Leonard’s disorienting experience, presenting much of the story in reverse chronological order. Each revelation changes the significance of earlier scenes, creating a mystery that becomes more complicated as the viewer gains information. Understanding Memento‘s intricate timeline requires considerable attention, although that’s precisely what makes the movie so rewarding. Few thrillers encourage audiences to reconsider every apparent certainty with such ingenuity.

Cary Grant stars as Roger Thornhill, a successful advertising executive whose life becomes a nightmare after mysterious agents mistake him for an American spy. Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 masterpiece sends its reluctant protagonist across the United States, pursued by criminals and authorities alike. Eva Marie Saint and James Mason complete an extraordinary cast in a story that continually balances suspense with sophistication.
The famous crop-duster sequence remains among cinema’s greatest demonstrations of visual tension, transforming an apparently harmless rural landscape into a terrifying trap. Hitchcock understood that danger becomes particularly effective when audiences know something terrible is approaching but cannot predict exactly when it will strike. The film also shares fascinating similarities with Hitchcock’s earlier The 39 Steps, demonstrating the director’s remarkable ability to refine his favorite ideas. More than six decades later, North by Northwest remains effortlessly entertaining.
Dial M For Murder

Hitchcock returned to the subject of murder with 1954’s Dial M for Murder, an ingenious thriller starring Ray Milland as a former professional tennis player plotting to kill his wealthy wife, Margot (Grace Kelly). Having discovered her affair, Tony Wendice devises an apparently flawless scheme involving blackmail and a carefully arranged telephone call. Predictably, his plan encounters complications that even an accomplished manipulator cannot anticipate.
Much of the film unfolds inside a single apartment, allowing Hitchcock to generate enormous suspense through ordinary objects and seemingly insignificant details. Kelly is excellent as a woman who gradually discovers the terrifying extent of her husband’s deception. Interestingly, Hitchcock reportedly regarded Dial M for Murder as a relatively routine assignment, despite creating one of his finest thrillers. Its intricate plotting remains an absolute pleasure, especially for viewers who enjoy watching an apparently perfect crime unravel.

A group of armed criminals hijacks a New York City subway train and threatens to execute its passengers unless authorities deliver a substantial ransom. Joseph Sargent’s 1974 thriller stars Walter Matthau as transit police lieutenant Zachary Garber, who finds himself negotiating with the ruthless gang leader portrayed by Robert Shaw. The premise is deceptively straightforward, but the execution is almost unbearably tense.
The film captures the gritty atmosphere of 1970s New York, with its subway tunnels providing an exceptionally claustrophobic setting. Matthau’s wonderfully understated performance contrasts with Shaw’s intimidating professionalism, creating a battle of wits that drives the action. As demonstrated by Shaw’s remarkable performance shortly before Jaws, the film deserves far more recognition than it typically receives. Forget the 2009 remake; the original remains a terrific example of old-fashioned suspense filmmaking.

Revenge movies generally feature protagonists who possess an extraordinary talent for violence. Jeremy Saulnier takes a considerably more realistic approach in Blue Ruin, his acclaimed 2013 independent thriller starring Macon Blair. Dwight Evans is a homeless drifter whose life changes when he learns that the man responsible for a devastating event in his past is being released from prison.
Dwight’s determination to seek revenge quickly exposes his complete lack of preparation for the violence he’s attempting to commit. His mistakes have horrifying consequences, transforming the familiar revenge narrative into something unpredictable and painfully believable. Saulnier subsequently directed Green Room and Rebel Ridge, establishing himself as one of the most compelling modern thriller filmmakers. Yet Blue Ruin remains particularly impressive because it dismantles the fantasy of effortless vengeance, showing how easily violence can spiral beyond anyone’s control.
The Guilty

Gustav Möller’s extraordinary 2018 Danish thriller The Guilty takes place almost entirely inside an emergency dispatch center. Jakob Cedergren plays Asger Holm, a police officer temporarily assigned to answering emergency calls while awaiting a disciplinary hearing. When a frightened woman contacts him, Asger becomes convinced she’s been abducted and desperately attempts to coordinate a rescue using only the information available over the telephone.
The film achieves remarkable suspense with minimal locations and almost no conventional action. Cedergren’s performance carries the narrative, while carefully constructed sound design allows audiences to imagine events unfolding far beyond the camera’s view. The story later inspired the American remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, but the original remains the stronger achievement. Its most disturbing moments force viewers to confront how easily limited information can produce disastrously mistaken assumptions.

Robert Mitchum delivers one of cinema’s most frightening performances in Charles Laughton’s The Night of the Hunter, a haunting 1955 thriller about a murderous preacher pursuing two young children. Reverend Harry Powell presents himself as a respectable man of faith, but his interest in a recently widowed mother conceals a sinister obsession with money hidden by her late husband.
Laughton’s only feature as director combines Southern Gothic horror with the visual language of German Expressionism, creating images that resemble disturbing fairy-tale illustrations. Mitchum’s unnerving performance makes Powell terrifying even when he’s apparently behaving kindly, while Lillian Gish provides a powerful counterbalance as a woman determined to protect the vulnerable children. Roger Ebert famously praised The Night of the Hunter as one of American cinema’s greatest achievements. It’s an extraordinary film whose nightmarish beauty has become even more impressive with age.
