MARSHFIELD — Heavyweight fights rarely end after the first punch. But even for the best boxers, an early knockdown makes recovery difficult.

So when the Marshfield High football team’s first possession on Friday, Oct. 23, ended with Hingham’s Henry Weibley blocking a Ram punt at their 30 yard-line, scooping it up and running it back for a touchdown, you had to wonder how quickly the Rams could pick themselves up off the canvas.

But Marshfield’s hurry-up offense — and their steely senior class — is designed to counterpunch. The Rams responded with 41 unanswered points and beat the Harbormen 44-21 on their Senior Night to remain atop the Patriot League Keenan Division.

Marshfield (5-1, 3-0 Keenan) ran its no-huddle offense at a pace Hingham (4-3, 2-2 Keenan) never matched, and senior linebacker Keigan Holte snatched two momentum-shifting interceptions to keep the Harbormen from finding a foothold.

The turning point came early. Down 7-0, Marshfield lost a fumble when Hingham’s Jake Araujo stripped Cole Hannigan on a sweep, and senior linebacker Cole Palek recovered near the Hingham 25. The tide seemed to be turning in Harbormen’s favor.

But a few plays later, Holte made a diving interception at the Hingham 45. From there, Marshfield got back in it: a 20-yard screen to Austin Bossey got the Rams to the red zone, and Jack Giannetti ran in from 17 yards on third-and-1. Giannetti then threw a 2-point pass to Hannigan out of the Wildcat for an 8-7 lead with 5:15 left in the first quarter.

On the next drive, Hannigan caught a deep wheel route from Nate Rollinson on the Rams’ sideline, cut back through diving defenders, and scampered into the end zone for a 60-yard touchdown. Marshfield never looked back.

Early in the second quarter, after a pass interference call moved Marshfield inside the red zone, Hannigan scored on a 6-yard sweep.

On Holte’s second interception, he stepped in front of a laser from Hingham’s junior quarterback, Liam Merrigan, and raced 32 yards to the Hingham 33-yard line, setting up a 25-yard field goal by Mikey Appel. Appel added a second field goal with two seconds left to take a 27-7 halftime lead.

“I don’t know why Aidan’s name isn’t out there more. To me, he’s the best offensive lineman on the South Shore,” Marshfield coach Chris Arouca said. “All the seniors did awesome tonight.”

On Marshfield’s opening drive, Bossey broke a 37-yard run from his own territory to set the Rams up at the Hingham 17 and finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown. After a Hingham fumble on a would-be jet sweep at its own 16, Giannetti sliced through the Hingham defense from 14 yards out and cemented a commanding 41-7 lead.

For their part, Hingham never stopped swinging. After momentarily bobbling the squibbed kickoff following Giannetti’s touchdown, Harvard-commit Palek dashed for a 92-yard kickoff return touchdown, and Riley Bello added a 17-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. James Slankas kicked all three extra points for Hingham.

In the end, Marshfield’s 27 seniors and their unconquerable spirit made their Senior Night one to remember.

Keigan Holte won’t forget it. “Most of us started playing football with each other in third or fourth grade, so it’s awesome to come out here at our last home game and get the win together,” Holte beamed. “It’s huge.”
