60 Years Later, Star Trek Officially Brings Back an Iconic Character for a New Release

Hannah covers horror, sci-fi, and games at Collider, where she writes news and features, reviews new releases, and interviews the people who make them. She’s helping build out Collider‘s gaming coverage, with Pokémon as one of her specialties. If she isn’t writing about a monster, she’s probably watching one on a tape from her VHS collection.

Star Trek is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and its next tabletop release draws from considerably more than the captain’s chair. Wizards of the Coast‘s upcoming Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek set brings the franchise’s civilizations and technology into the trading card game. Familiar faces are part of the appeal, though the people keeping a starship running have plenty to contribute, too.

Previous previews have already offered a look at Kirk, Picard, Sisko, and other franchise favorites. The crossover launches on November 13, giving collectors and players a new way to celebrate six decades of exploration. Ahead of that release, Collider has an exclusive selection of cards to share, led by a particularly important Vulcan. Collider can exclusively reveal eight cards from Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek, including two art treatments for Sarek, Federation Ambassador. Spock’s father appears alongside Astute Terraformer, Boarding Action, Fugitive Listener, Oberth-Class Starship, Pattern Buffer Preservation, Photosynthetic Physician, and Tal Shiar Analyst. Check out all nine images in the gallery below.

Your answers point to the iconic sci-fi hero who shares your instincts, your values, and your particular way of facing the impossible.

You carry a weight most people would crumble under — the knowledge of what you’re capable of, and the burden of what you might have to become.

  • You see further ahead than others and you plan accordingly, even when the vision frightens you.
  • You are driven by loyalty to your people and a sense of destiny you didn’t ask for but can’t escape.
  • Paul Atreides is not simply a hero — he is someone who understands the cost of power and chooses to bear it anyway.
  • That gravity, that willingness to carry what others won’t, is exactly you.

You lead with instinct, warmth, and an absolute refusal to accept a no-win scenario — because you’ve always believed there’s a third option nobody else has thought of yet.

  • You take the mission seriously without ever taking yourself too seriously.
  • Your crew would follow you anywhere, not because you demand it, but because you’ve earned it.
  • Kirk’s genius isn’t tactical — it’s human. He reads people, bends rules with purpose, and wills outcomes into existence through sheer conviction.
  • That combination of warmth, audacity, and relentless optimism is unmistakably yours.

You are the kind of person who holds the line when everyone else is losing faith — not because you’re fearless, but because giving up simply isn’t something you’re capable of.

  • You lead through conviction. Your voice carries because your belief is unshakeable.
  • You gave up everything ordinary the moment you chose the cause, and you’ve never looked back.
  • Leia is not a supporting character in her own story — she is the moral centre of the entire rebellion.
  • That same fierce, principled, unbreakable core is what defines you.

You are not reckless, not grandiose, and not particularly interested in being anyone’s hero — you just refuse to stop when it matters.

  • You see threats clearly, you document the truth even when no one listens, and when the time comes you handle it yourself.
  • Ripley’s heroism is earned, not performed. She doesn’t have a speech — she has a flamethrower and a plan.
  • You share her composure under the worst possible pressure, and her refusal to pretend the monster isn’t there.
  • When it counts, you don’t flinch. That’s everything.

You have been through fire that would break most people — and what came out the other side is something the world underestimates at its peril.

  • You don’t ask for help, don’t need validation, and don’t wait for anyone to tell you the rules no longer apply.
  • Your loyalty, when it finally arrives, is absolute — but it’s earned in silence and tested in action, not in words.
  • Max is not a nihilist. He is someone who lost everything and found, against his will, that he still has something worth protecting.
  • That bruised, stubborn, ultimately human core is exactly yours.

Sarek, Federation Ambassador rewards players for assembling a diverse crew. The green, white, and blue legendary creature draws a card at the beginning of combat on your turn for every five creature types among your non-Borg creatures. Drawing at least three cards that way adds two +1/+1 counters to every creature you control, giving the ambassador considerable influence without requiring him to throw a punch. The standard card features artwork by Darren Tan, depicting Sarek extending his hand in a diplomatic greeting. Oliver Barrett‘s alternate version gives the Vulcan a striking portrait framed by gold and a cosmic background. Both versions feature the same abilities, with the standard treatment also carrying the succinct flavor text, “Threats are illogical.”

Several supporting cards find equally fitting ways to translate Trek into gameplay. Boarding Action creates a Klingon Warrior token with haste, while Pattern Buffer Preservation lets players choose one of their library’s top two cards to keep and send the other to the graveyard. Both feature Beam me up, allowing another cast from the graveyard by paying the listed cost and returning a creature you control to its owner’s hand before exiling the spell. Elsewhere, Fugitive Listener forces each opponent to discard a card when it enters, and Tal Shiar Analyst damages every opponent with its tap ability, then untaps whenever you cast a noncreature spell. Astute Terraformer benefits from differently named lands, while Photosynthetic Physician can be exiled from the graveyard to create an Officer token. Finally, Oberth-Class Starship finds a basic Plains for your hand and can become a flying creature once sufficiently staffed through its Station ability.

Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek launches November 13, with pre-release events beginning November 6 and its MTG Arena release arriving November 10. Stay tuned at Collider for more.
