Waukee Northwest, Boone claim Iowa girls state tennis team titles

Waukee Northwest and Boone capped off the Iowa high school girls tennis season in style on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

The Wolves (Class 2A) and Toreadors (Class 1A) claimed team state titles in their respective classes. Waukee Northwest did it just a few days after earning doubles and singles state championships, while Boone won its first girls team state tennis title since 2008.

Competing on home turf at Waukee Northwest High School, the Wolves started with back-to-back wins Oct. 12 to reach the finals. They took down Iowa City West, followed by West Des Moines Valley with back-to-back 5-0 victories. That set up an early-morning clash with Johnston on Oct. 13. Waukee Northwest took down the Dragons, 5-1, to secure the team state title and a clean sweep of all three girls tennis state championships.

It puts the cap on a stellar year for Waukee Northwest, with a singles title for sophomore Addison Latta, a doubles title for senior Riley Hilton and junior Alexa Perugini and now a team title. This is the program’s second-consecutive year winning all three girls state tennis titles.

West Des Moines Valley claimed third place by taking down Pleasant Valley, 5-2.

In Class 1A, the Toreadors opened with a 5-0 sweep of Fairfield, followed by a 5-2 victory over Pella to reach the finals. Boone had a tall task to win the state championship, needing to get through powerhouse Cedar Rapids Xavier. The Saints claimed the double and singles title just a few weeks ago and had won the last three team state titles. But Boone pulled off the upset with a 5-2 win to claim the state crown.

Pella took third place in Class 1A by defeating Central DeWitt, 5-3.
