Nothing should surprise Texas Tech football fans at this point. The Red Raiders have dealt with plenty of injunctions and eligibility controversy, but the latest development is working in their favor. Thomas Castellanos has been granted a temporary injunction, per On3’s Pete Nakos, allowing him to rejoin the squad.

The 23-year-old quarterback is one of many players who have pursued a fifth-year of eligibility this season, a privilege the NCAA is extending to everyone who enrolled after the 2022 freshmen class. Athletes have unsurprisingly flocked to courtrooms to fight the ruling, but the opposition has been steady and fierce. Castellanos, who operates primarily as a rusher for Texas Tech in special packages, has endured his share of ups and downs during this legal process.

Originally permitted to play, the mobile signal-caller saw his injunction get reversed by a panel of judges in Kentucky and was therefore ineligible to compete in an Oct. 3 win over Colorado. He is back in action for the moment, however.

Will Hammond remains the team’s No. 1 passing QB, but head coach Joey McGuire obviously values the elusiveness Castellanos can bring. The former UCF, Boston College and Florida State QB has completed 2-of-4 passes for 35 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 44 yards and two more TDs. It remains to be seen what role he will occupy in Saturday afternoon’s home matchup against Arizona State, but the Red Raiders will at least have options

Eligibility debates will hopefully cease to exist starting next season, but for now, Thomas Castellanos and other fifth-year seekers will continue to operate with a chip on their shoulder. Texas Tech and Arizona State square off at 3:30 p.m. ET in Lubbock.
