Yaxel Lendeborg’s huge performance against the Denver Nuggets has led to high praise from Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry.
Yaxel Lendeborg made headlines in his first NBA game ever by not backing down in a confrontation with Luka Doncic. The Warriors lost that game against the Lakers, and the next two as well. This streak ended on Monday night, and it was largely thanks to Lendeborg himself.
The 24-year-old may have gotten his ‘welcome to the NBA’ moment when Doncic hit that shot from halfcourt, but against the Denver Nuggets, it was Yaxel who announced his arrival. The young star led the Warriors in scoring as they got their first win of the season against the Denver Nuggets.
Stephen Curry describes how Yaxel Lendeborg’s ‘composure and feel’ make him a matchup problem
When Lendeborg made his now infamous comments about Doncic, many of his detractors suggested he should play at a high level before he says all this. In the Warriors’ 134-114 win, Lendeborg put up 31 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists, a superstar performance by any metric.
After the game, a visibly pleased Stephen Curry showered the rookie with praise, giving him some big compliments.
“His composure. I mean, he just came off a NCAA Championship run and he’s just got composure and feel,” Curry said. “His size on the court, he’s a matchup problem. He’s not ever really in a hurry and he’s starting to see the picture really well.
Distributing, being aggressive, getting to the free throw line, offensive rebounding. Kind of the full package. So we want him to continue playing aggressive.”
If Lendeborg can establish himself as a productive starter as a rookie, that would be a massive boon to a struggling Warriors team. He has shown he has the ability to play at the highest level, and this is now something he simply has to produce with consistency.
