Soludo approves full implementation of 2025 FG-ASUU agreement at COOU
The statement noted that the full implementation of the Federal Government-ASUU agreement had remained unresolved at COOU for several years, with previous administrations reportedly failing to fulfil promises concerning the matter.
It added that the governor’s approval would address the longstanding issue, although implementation is scheduled to begin in January 2027.
Government Links Decision to Education Agenda
The university said the approval aligned with Soludo’s education agenda, which emphasises improving the teaching profession and ensuring that educators receive appropriate motivation and rewards.
The statement referenced the governor’s commitment to “restore teaching as a profession of pride… (Where) teachers will be motivated and rewarded appropriately.”
According to the university, the decision reflects the state government’s stated commitment to investing in education and strengthening the systems and structures needed to improve public institutions.
The administration has also identified the transformation of COOU into a university of global stature as one of its objectives.
The university described the implementation of the 2025 agreement as one of the steps towards achieving that ambition.
Implementation Scheduled for January 2027
Although the governor has approved the full implementation of the agreement, the university said the decision would take effect in January 2027.
The approval is expected to provide a basis for addressing the outstanding issues associated with the agreement and improving conditions for academic staff at the institution.
The statement did not provide a detailed breakdown of the financial implications of the implementation or specify the individual components of the agreement covered by the approval.
It also did not outline a separate timetable for implementing the various provisions beyond the stated commencement date.
The university expressed optimism that the decision would contribute to its broader development objectives and strengthen efforts to improve staff welfare.
The approval places the implementation of the agreement on the university’s agenda for the 2027 calendar year, with its impact expected to depend on the execution of the governor’s directive from the scheduled commencement date.
For COOU staff, the decision represents progress on an issue the university says has remained unresolved for years. The next stage will be the commencement of implementation in January 2027, in line with the approval communicated through the university’s Governing Council chairman.
