One Year On: How Canva Education Is Taking Root Across Africa
  • Canva Learning Labs, Ghana (24 January 2026): hosted by the Teacherpreneurship Network GH with Canva Africa to mark the International Day of Education, with hands-on workshops for teachers and school leaders in Tema, Accra and beyond.
  • Community-led training: organisations such as Mobile Web Ghana, working with the U.S. Embassy’s American Corner in Agbogba, have trained teachers from local education directorates to use Canva for Education alongside AI tools.
  • Monthly webinars and the Canva Africa Educator Community, offered through the Snapplify partnership.

Competitions and creator programmes

Canva’s Africa Design Challenge, launched with the 2025 expansion, invited creators and designers from across Sub-Saharan Africa to submit templates for a share of a US$10,000 prize pool. Winners were offered mentorship from Canva designers, a one-year Canva Pro subscription and a place in Canva’s template library. The company is also growing its Africa Design Community, Africa Creators and Canvassador programmes. Although these target creators more than classrooms, they feed the same ecosystem: teachers can also become Educreators and earn from the materials they publish.

What the evidence does and doesn’t show

The figures above come mostly from Canva, its partners and trade coverage of announcements. Three caveats are worth keeping in mind:

  • Access numbers (for example, the 800,000 learners and 100,000 teachers reachable through Snapplify) describe who can log in, not who actively uses the tool.
  • South Africa dominates the data. Outside it, the public record is thinner: the Ethiopia MoU, the Ghana events and the regional partnerships have few published outcomes so far.
  • There is no independent evaluation yet of learning outcomes. Canva’s own materials stress that tool access alone does not transform teaching, and that teachers need training and support to use it well.

What to watch next

  • Whether the Department of Basic Education partnership reaches all nine provinces.
  • How many teachers complete accredited training under the SACE agreement.
  • Whether the Ethiopia agreement and other ministry conversations turn into deployments, and in which countries next.
  • Whether independent research starts to measure what happens in classrooms.

For teachers, the practical takeaway is simple: Canva Education is free for eligible teachers and students, and the training and community pipeline is growing. For policymakers and school leaders, the question for year two is moving from access to measurable classroom impact.
