However, the union did not indicate that all the issues raised during the dispute had been fully resolved, making the continued engagement with the state government a key part of the next phase of negotiations.
The suspension therefore provides an opportunity for academic activities to resume while both parties work towards resolving the remaining disagreements.
ASUU Thanks Students, Parents and Stakeholders
The union expressed appreciation to the media, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, students, parents and other stakeholders for their support throughout the industrial action and subsequent negotiations.
It specifically acknowledged the contributions of pro-worker organisations, including the Joint Action Front (JAF), Education Rights Concern (ERC) and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights (CDWR), for their advocacy on staff welfare and quality public tertiary education.
The ASUU leaders also commended traditional rulers for their interventions during the dispute.
Students and parents were praised for their patience and understanding despite the disruption to teaching, learning and other academic activities across the affected institutions.
The union said the support received from these groups contributed to efforts to advance its demands and sustain pressure for the implementation of outstanding agreements.
Welfare Negotiations to Continue
Despite suspending the industrial action, ASUU stressed that its struggle was not over, maintaining that further discussions with the Lagos State Government would be necessary to secure the full resolution of outstanding welfare issues.
The union said it remained committed to ensuring that agreements affecting its members were implemented and that concerns over staff welfare received sustained attention.
The position suggests that the suspension should not be interpreted as a complete resolution of the dispute, as negotiations are expected to continue between the union and the state government.
The statement did not provide a detailed timetable for concluding the remaining discussions or specify when all outstanding welfare matters would be fully implemented.
“As our members return to classrooms immediately, we reaffirm our commitment to academic excellence and quality university education,” the statement added.
The union’s decision marks a step towards restoring academic activities at LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH after the disruption caused by the industrial action.
The resumption is expected to ease concerns among students and parents, while the outcome of further negotiations will determine how the outstanding welfare issues are addressed and whether the agreement between the parties is fully implemented.
