Outlining the project execution timeline on behalf of LASIAMA General Manager Yemisi Aderibigbe, the Head of the Project Management Unit noted that executive approval for the structural conversion was granted in December 2024, with PCP Construction Nigeria Limited engaged as the main contractor:
- Construction Scope: Civil works commenced in March 2025, covering selective site demolition, structural reinforcement, roofing overhauls, walling, interior fittings, and full mechanical and electrical installations across main and auxiliary blocks.
- Asset Utilisation: Transforming under-utilised post-pandemic health infrastructure into an immediate, cost-effective space solution to address medical classroom and practical training deficits.
- Interim Integration: The Yaba complex will serve as an auxiliary teaching site while permanent campus expansion master plans progress toward the 2028 enrollment target.
Mitigating Brain Drain and Expanding the Health Pipeline
Accepting the facility on behalf of the state, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, framed the project as a decisive countermeasure against the ongoing migration of Nigerian medical personnel (“Japa” syndrome) to foreign jurisdictions.
Prof. Abayomi stressed that the state government is pursuing a dual-track strategy: aggressively expanding the domestic training pipeline for physicians and allied health experts, while simultaneously building modern clinical infrastructure to attract overseas-trained Nigerian professionals back into the local healthcare ecosystem.
Attending the ceremony alongside other senior health officials, the Provost of LASUCOM, Prof. Olufemi Idowu, commended the state government for delivering the facility, assuring that the additional capacity will be immediately deployed for practical medical instruction, research, and clinical skill development.
