  • Mendoza wins WBC and WBA flyweight titles

  • This was an upset, but it was a fight I had a little inkling about coming in. Sandoval was supposed to fight Oscar Collazo, who pulled out with an injury. Sandoval hadn’t fought in 15 months, he needed to fight, needed to defend his belts. In place of Collazo — a 5’2″, 105 lb champ coming up two divisions — he faced Mendoza, who is 5’8″ and a natural flyweight. That’s a jarring change in the opponent you at least started preparing to face, and combine that with a long layoff, and you had the makings of a tough night for Sandoval, which it was. Mendoza (28-1, 24 KO) put Sandoval (27-3, 18 KO) down three times in total and earned the stoppage. Sandoval did try to get back into it after a pair of second round knockdowns, and he looked good in the fourth, but then he got caught again. Mendoza was patient, saw the opening, and decked him again, took advantage of it. It was a tremendous performance for Sergio Mendoza, obviously the biggest win of his career, he’s now a unified world champion — you got to see a 26-year-old fighter step into a huge situation unexpectedly, and he delivered in at least one of the greatest nights of his young life. Congratulations to him.

  • Harvey (5-0, 4 KO) continues to look sharp as he develops and gets his career going. It’s lower level, absolutely, but he’s showing some one-shot power to go with his finely-tuned skills from being a standout amateur and spending years now honing his craft. He’s one to be excited about at 135, a serious prospect and was a really good get by MVP.

  • Official Scores: 99-89 from all three judges
  • Solid win for the 25-year-old Rivera, who improves to 17-0 (7 KO). Not sure of his ultimate upside, but I think he might be a fairly high-floor kind of guy, too. He has a pleasant style, not an action star, but easy to watch, doesn’t allow for lulls. Not a big puncher, but throws his hands and stays active in there. And this was an easy fight to watch. Perfecto (14-3, 9 KO) got dropped once and Rivera was penalized a point, so it was really a clean sweep for Rivera, and deserved.
