“It is very exciting for me to be the first signing of the season,” Viery told the official club website.

“I worked very hard at Porto Alegre and gave everything for Gremio, so now I am enjoying this special moment. I feel very honoured to wear the Fiorentina shirt.”

He scored twice from defence in 27 competitive games for Gremio last season, having come up through their youth academy, promoted to the senior squad in 2025.

Viery turned 21 in January and had been linked with numerous different clubs, including Juventus, Roma, Napoli, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.

He is primarily a centre-back, but can also play on the right side of defence.

“I studied the way Sergio Ramos played in defence, I loved the Paolo Maldini videos and today I can appreciate the style of Virgil Van Dijk,” continued the defender.

“There are other players I watch too and find things in each of them to appreciate, so I can try to improve my own game. I am a defender with good stamina, make the most of my physical strength, and like to participate in playing out from the back.”

Viery confessed he was unable to watch Brazil’s World Cup Round of 32 win over Japan because he was flying out at the time towards Europe, but is cheering on Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

“I am sure we’ll get to the Final.”
