West Branch breaks record and secures league title in win over Salem

SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – West Branch girls soccer rolled past Salem, 6-0, to continue their perfect season and break a school record.

Cambrie Nezbeth opened the scoring for the Warriors on the night, scoring the first goal less than three minutes into the game.

Ellie Tucker would also provide two goals on the night while adding an assist.

But the star of the night for the Warriors was the defense who provided its 11th shutout of the season. Senior Goalkeeper Audrey Eaton provided the Warriors with four saves in the victory.

“Our defense definitely has stepped up and played well,” head coach Zachary Dean said. “That starts with our goalkeeper, bringing a lot of experience back there, helping lead us, and keeping us organized. We’re just putting a lot of pressure on the other team and not letting them get many opportunities at our goal.”

While the defense has stepped up and played a major role, scoring their 83rd goal of the season set a new season-high record for West Branch girls soccer.

“Yeah, we put a lot of time in. I know we had a couple of days off where we actually came in and did captain-led practices,” captain Ellie Tucker said. “We really want it this year. I think last year we were a little bit upset with the way our season ended. So, this year it’s just extra motivation. We want to keep going and keep it at zero in that loss section of our stats.”

West Branch will be back in action on Oct. 6 against Cardinal Mooney. Salem will take the field again on Oct. 5 against Rootstown.
