Plaxico Burress lived out the dream of millions to be in the NFL, but he admitted that playing for one NFL team reminded him of his life when he was in jail.
Burress won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants and is considered among the greatest players in the franchise’s history.
However, a one-year stint with the neighboring New York Jets had him feeling the way he did when he was in prison.
Playing for the New York Jets compared to being in jail
Burress appeared on ‘The Joint Venture Show,’ hosted by Lil Wayne and Craig Carton, where he described how he felt like a loser when he was in jail, a feeling only comparable to his lone season with the Jets.
“They’re both kind of similar because when I walked into prison on my first day, I was like, ‘Damn man, you a —— loser.’ And I had the same damn feeling every day I walked through the door with the Jets.”
Burress joined the Jets immediately after serving 20 months in prison, staying in New York after an illustrious career with the Giants.
He had an average season on the Jets, getting 45 receptions, 612 receiving yards, and 13.6 yards per catch.
This was turning out to be a good Jets year, as they were 8-5 and one win away from the Playoffs, but they ended the season with three straight losses to miss the postseason entirely.
Burress would leave the following offseason to rejoin the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he started his career, retiring after the 2013 season.
The Jets are still considered a laughing stock in the NFL, finishing last season with a 3-14 record, and projected to struggle this season as well.
Why did Plaxico Burress go to jail?
Burress accidentally shot himself in his right thigh at the Latin Quarter nightclub in Manhattan in November 2008 while a member of the New York Giants.
He was carrying an unholstered .40 caliber-Glock pistol, which was fully loaded. The gun was tucked in his waistband and would fall when he walked up some stairs, discharging as he tried to grab it.
Burress had an expired carrying permit in Florida, but New York has different gun-control regulations, arguably the strongest in the United States.
He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of attempted criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.
He was sentenced to two years in state prison, getting released after serving 20 months in 2011 and resuming his NFL career.
