It’s September 11. The U.S. is reminiscing the tragic event that took place back in 2001, when the Twin Towers collapsed in New York City. One of the most historic moments in sports took place 10 days later, when Mike Piazza hit a home run playing for the New York Mets in the club’s first game since the terrorist attacks.
The Hall of Fame catcher took some time on Friday on the 25th anniversary of 9/11 to talk about that historic home run. While guest appearing on the MLB Network, Piazza shared his point of view after hitting the home run and realizing just how much it meant to the city of New York.
“The fact that running around the bases, I don’t remember touching the ground,” Piazza said. “I don’t remember touching the bases. [I was thinking about] a lot of things. We were talking before about just the build up to the at-bat… And also a little luck. I actually said that because, Steve [Karsay], I’ve faced him before. He had a good arm, and after I took the first pitch, I was thinking, ‘Is he gonna come in a little bit? Is he gonna throw a breaking ball?’

And fortunately, he gave me the same pitch,” Piazza continued… “I think as an athlete we were trained to do what we do. But you do need inspiration. You need adrenaline. And I felt every one in that ball park pulling for me. It allowed me to really relax and have this sense of calm, and not get too excited… I was just fortunate. That was in the right place at the right time. Even before the game. That just praying. You know, I’m a man of faith, and saying, ‘Lord, get me through this night.’ I just wanted to survive the night emotionally because of everything we had been through.”

The 12-time All-Star eventually retired from baseball about six years later, as he finished his career after the 2007 season. Eight of those years were with the Mets. Piazza ended his career with a .308 batting average and .377 OBP while totaling 2,127 hits, 427 home runs, and 1,335 RBIs.
