LeBron James Disses San Antonio (And Its Famous River Walk)

LeBron James made waves earlier this year when he criticized Memphis, but it seems he’s not done throwing shade on NBA cities.

On a recent episode of his “Mind the Game” podcast with Steve Nash, James broke down why he thought the New York Knicks took Games 1 and 2 in San Antonio before falling to the Spurs in Game 3 at Madison Square Garden.

That reason? San Antonio is a boring city, he claims.

“I mean, San Antonio, we focus on basketball,” James said. “You ain’t doing s–t in San Antonio. Nothing at all. Nothing. And I mean nothing.”

As detailed by Ryan Anderson of the California Post, James “painted the city as basketball’s version of a productivity retreat. No red carpets. No Club Room at Soho Grand. No endless social calendar. Just basketball.”

He even pushed back against Nash’s attempt to highlight San Antonio’s famous River Walk.

“Hell no,” James said. “You get on a River Walk, f— around and fall in the water.”

It’s worth noting that James lost two NBA Finals to San Antonio before he landed in LA, though he and the Miami Heat did famously defeat the Spurs in the 2013 Finals.

What did LeBron James say about Memphis?

The San Antonio remark comes just a few months after James made waves by criticizing Memphis, and specifically, the hotel visiting teams stay in.

Despite the online controversy, James defended what he said.

“I’m 41 years old and there’s 2 cities I don’t like playing in, Milwaukee and Memphis,” he said. “I’m not talking about the people in Memphis. I just don’t like staying at the Hyatt Centric, what’s wrong with that? What are we talking about?”

James reaffirmed that stance when speaking with Time magazine about his placement on their list of the 100 most influential people in sports.

“Everything I say and do is overblown,” he told Time. “I don’t have a problem with Memphis people. People need to know that. I have a problem with that hotel, and I don’t like going there.”
