The New York Knicks rode the high of their first NBA championship in 53 years for several days, until owner James Dolan brought everything to a halt with a mandate to keep the team out of the second tax apron.
New York’s most recent championship team will not be back in full for the 2026-27 season, as center Mitchell Robinson, the longest tenured Knick, is likely to move on and get starter-level money from a team with cap space.
But where does that leave the Knicks? They need a backup behind Karl-Anthony Towns, and someone competent enough to fill Robinson’s vacant role. Is there a free agent out there that could fit the bill?
Ian Begley links Kevon Looney to Knicks due to Mike Brown connection
SNY’s Ian Begley named former Golden State Warriors center Kevon Looney as a potential Robinson replacement, citing his past relationship with current Knicks head coach Mike Brown.
Brown previously served as an assistant coach in Golden State when Looney was coming up in the league.
“You mentioned Kevon Looney, and that’s an interesting one because of his relationship…with Mike Brown, and you know, they were together in Golden State,” Begley said on his podcast, The Putback.
“There will be mutual interest between the Knicks and Looney as the free agency period opens. Is he the ultimate answer to a Mitchell Robinson replacement? We’ll have to find out.”
Looney isn’t the offensive rebounding machine that Robinson is, but he’s still a solid rim protector and would certainly cost less than Robinson on the free agent market.
There’s still a chance the Knicks could find a way to retain their long-time center, but it would likely require a hometown discount and New York cutting more salary.
