Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, and Matthew Stafford claimed the top spots in this year’s football rankings, finishing just ahead of the Cincinnati Bengals‘ starting quarterback Joe Burrow. This special list came together through votes from NFL coaches, scouts, and leaders who know the game best.

NFL coaches point to Joe Burrow’s processing as his biggest strength

Burrow finished fourth in ESPN’s annual quarterback rankings after votes from NFL executives, coaches, and scouts. While he remained near the top, durability concerns led several evaluators to move him outside their top three after he missed 16 games since 2023.

Even with those concerns, league decision-makers continued to praise Burrow’s control of the position. One NFL personnel evaluator said he has the “best pocket movement in the league” and also called his vision and processing speed the best in football.

Another NFL coordinator said Burrow’s impact goes beyond the playbook. “Burrow doesn’t play in a system. He is the system,” the coordinator said, pointing to the quarterback’s ability to run an offense through his decisions before and after the snap.

Evaluators noted Burrow benefits from throwing to Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, but several said his biggest strength is not his supporting cast or physical traits. Instead, they pointed to how quickly he reads defenses and gets the ball out before pressure arrives.

That quick release often frustrates opposing defenses. “The ball is out. That ball is OUT,” one NFL coordinator said, adding that Burrow also waits for deeper routes when needed.

The numbers support that view. Over the past five seasons, Burrow has recorded 16 games with at least 300 passing yards and three touchdown passes, two more than any other quarterback during that span.

Injuries affected this year’s rankings, but the latest vote shows evaluators still see Burrow as one of the league’s smartest and most efficient quarterbacks when he plays.
