The next James Bond edges ever closer as the minutes, hours, days and weeks go by, which will end up putting an end to one of Hollywood’s longest-running guessing games, and while audiences are still waiting to discover who will inherit the famous tuxedo, there are plenty of other questions up in the air. Denis Villeneuve is currently preparing to reinvent 007 for a new generation but will we see a Judi Dench-style scenario where we get a veteran crossing over? Possibly, but one actor has ruled it out.
Ben Whishaw has confirmed that he won’t be returning as Q for Villeneuve’s upcoming James Bond reboot, bringing his time as MI6’s gadget specialist to an end after three appearances opposite Craig. Speaking with The Sunday Times, the actor explained why he believes the franchise needs to change considerably following the conclusion of Craig’s era.
The world has changed so much since the last Bond film so you have to find what is relevant about it. I think it needs to be reinvented completely. But it’s not for me to say.

Whishaw first appeared as Q in 2012’s Skyfall, before returning for Spectre and No Time to Die. His younger, technologically gifted interpretation of the character became a popular part of Craig’s later adventures, replacing the more traditional gadget-master approach associated with Desmond Llewelyn and John Cleese.

What’s Happening With the Next James Bond Movie?
The upcoming reboot will be directed by Villeneuve, whose previous credits include Dune and Blade Runner 2049, with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight writing the screenplay. Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce the movie, although Amazon MGM Studios has yet to announce who will play Bond himself. Among the actors reportedly linked to the role are Callum Turner (Masters of the Air), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), and Josh O’Connor (Challengers), although no casting decision has been officially announced.
Whishaw also reflected on the extraordinary secrecy surrounding the Bond franchise, admitting that the intense speculation surrounding the character is very much part of the experience.
People go crazy about it. It’s all deliberate hype. When you are working on it, it’s incredibly secretive, almost like being a spy. You only get the pages of the script that you are in. It’s a ploy to create suspense and glamour, but it’s kind of fun.
