37 Years Later, Marvel's Original Vision Quest Series Is Still A Timeless Classic

37 years later, Marvel’s original Vision Quest storyline is well worth revisiting thanks to the MCU. As seen in the new VisionQuest series and the greater WandaVision trilogy, so much of the OG comics story was adapted as key source material.

Published in 1989 during John Byrne’s debut on Marvel’s West Coast Avengers, the writer and artist elected to systematically undo both Vision and Wanda’s marriage and essentially erase their children, as he wasn’t a big fan of a synthezoid having such a human arc. As such, Vision Quest and its following issues were a pivotal time for both Vision and Wanda, one that ended up having massive repercussions for years to come.

Keeping that in mind, the classic Marvel story has only become more essential and timeless thanks to the MCU’s WandaVision trilogy and particularly the latest VisionQuest series currently streaming on Disney+. Because the MCU has clearly adapted several of the original storyline’s ideas, returning to Byrne’s work 37 years later is all kinds of fascinating.

Marvel Comics’ Original Vision Quest Storyline Explained

Marvel Comics’ Vision Quest served as John Byrne’s debut arc on West Coast Avengers in the late 80s, and opens with Vision captured by joint government forces and completely dismantled. When he was put back together by Hank Pym, Vision regained his memories, but none of the emotions once attached to them. He also took on a new form as the emotionless “White Vision”, losing all the color and feelings he once had as Wanda Maximoff’s husband, straining and ultimately ending their marriage.

Beyond Vision losing his humanity, Byrne also revealed that Wanda and Vision’s sons weren’t real, instead being mere constructs created by Wanda that disappeared when she wasn’t thinking about them (they’d later be reincarnated years later). Agatha Harkness was even involved in this major arc, attempting to help Wanda face the truth about her boys and even erasing memories of them.

Additionally, the Vision Quest storyline also rewrote much of Vision’s origins by effectively retconning past claims that he was created by Ultron from the deactivated body of the original Human Torch aka Jim Hammond. Instead, it was revealed that Vision was created using spare parts from Hammond’s creator, Dr. Phineas Horton, with the real Human Torch returning to life, meeting White Vision himself face-to-face, and joining the West Coast Avengers.

With many more crazy elements in between (like Tigra losing herself to her more feline instincts), the initial Vision Quest arc and its following issues impressively managed to pack a lot of major status-quo-changing events in a fairly short amount of time.

Across the board, the influence of Byrne’s Vision Quest storyline is super easy to recognize in the MCU, beginning with 2021’s WandaVision, exploring Wanda’s grief and full breakdown after Vision’s death, with her powers manifesting a new Vision and children before giving them all her TV-perfect happy ending in the town of Westview.

Not only were the boys and this other Vision erased by WandaVision’s ending, but the original, real Vision was rebuilt by SWORD, becoming the emotionless White Vision who’d lost his humanity. Agatha Harkness was also involved, and the subsequent Agatha All Along series in 2024 continued her story while also including Billy Maximoff’s reincarnated self (William Kaplan).

Now, the connections to Byrne’s original comics continue with 2026’s VisionQuest series of the same name, building on the aftermath of WandaVision and Agatha All Along and starring White Vision as he attempts to regain his humanity, Ultron’s return, and Tommy Maximoff’s reincarnated self (Thomas Shepard). The yet-to-be-concluded series has also been revealing all-new connections between Vision’s origins and Jim Hammond, just like the original comic storyline did.

Of course, these shared elements have been reworked and adapted with more original storytelling. Just like with past MCU projects that share names with events originally on the page (Age of Ultron, Civil War, Brand New Day, Secret Wars, etc), VisionQuest and its connected shows take much of its DNA with its comic book counterpart, taking its most influential concepts and making them both familiar and fresh, and thus making the original story well worth revisiting 37 years later.

New episodes of VisionQuest release Tuesday nights on Disney+ from Marvel Studios.

Now searching for purpose, he consults the artificial intelligence personalities embedded in his programming, but a bounty on his head forces him to go on the run with Thomas Shepherd, a mysterious boy who may be the reincarnation of his son.
