'Home Alone’ Officially Gets a Disney Remake

There are very few Christmas movies quite as beloved as Home Alone, and more than three decades after Macaulay Culkin first started terrorizing the Wet Bandits, the holiday classic remains an essential part of the festive season. Disney has already tried revisiting the franchise several times, but you know what? Sometimes, instead of trying to carry on a story, it’s best to stick to what made it so magical in the first place. And that’s exactly what’s happening, as Disney is remaking Home Alone with their own spin.

Disney has officially unveiled the first trailer for Mickey’s Home Alone, a brand-new animated holiday special inspired by Home Alone, which premieres November 26 on Disney Jr. before arriving on Disney+ on November 27. The special will see Mickey Mouse and Pluto accidentally left behind when their friends head off on a Christmas adventure, forcing the pair to defend their holiday dinner from a pair of mischievous intruders.

In the special, he can’t wait to spend Christmas at home, but Mickey’s plans take a turn when Minnie surprises him and the gang with tickets to spend Christmas at a world-famous Ice Palace. In the morning rush to make it out the door, Mickey and Pluto are left behind and home alone, and must protect their Christmas dinner from two feisty villains, a raccoon and a weasel who are after it.

  • The first film not in the English language to win Best Picture, in the Academy’s
    92-year history to that point.
  • It took four Oscars in one night: Picture, Director, Original Screenplay and International
    Feature.
  • It won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2019 by a unanimous jury vote, the first Korean film
    to do so.
  • The Park family’s modernist house was not a location. It was built from scratch on an
    outdoor lot.
  • Seven Oscars, including three acting wins for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee
    Curtis.
  • Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to win Best Actress.
  • The visual effects were handled by a team of fewer than ten people, most of them
    self-taught.
  • Ke Huy Quan had all but left acting for two decades before this role brought him back.
  • Seven Oscars, including Nolan’s first wins for directing and for Best Picture.
  • Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. both took their first Academy Awards for it.
  • Kodak engineered a black-and-white 65mm stock that did not previously exist so Nolan could
    shoot those sequences on IMAX.
  • A three-hour, R-rated drama about theoretical physics that passed 950 million dollars
    worldwide.
  • Four Oscars, among them Best Picture and Best Director for Iñárritu.
  • Emmanuel Lubezki’s win here was the middle of three consecutive cinematography Oscars,
after Gravity and before The Revenant.
  • Antonio Sánchez’s improvised drum score was ruled ineligible for the score category,
    which caused a minor uproar.
  • The long-take illusion was built from a handful of extended shots joined by hidden cuts.
  • Four Oscars: Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Supporting Actor for Javier Bardem.
  • Adapted from Cormac McCarthy’s 2005 novel, with much of his dialogue carried over
    intact.
  • Carter Burwell’s score runs about sixteen minutes and is nearly inaudible by design.
  • Roger Deakins was nominated twice that year, for this and The Assassination of Jesse James,
    and won for neither.

How Successful Is ‘Home Alone’?

Enormously. And it made Culkin a very wealthy young man. The first film directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes, became one of the most successful family comedies ever made when it arrived in 1990, earning more than $476 million worldwide, and then Culkin negotiated a huge deal for the sequel. Home Alone 2 was a massive hit, grossing $356 million worldwide on a $28 million budget. While critical reviews were mixed, audiences embraced the higher stakes, bigger budget, and more chaotic slapstick. Culkin told Hot Ones that he had a huge slice of the action:

“I think I own five percent of the net. I also [get] 15 percent of the merchandising. So, if you buy a Talkboy, I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’ll take a percent of that. Thank you very much.'”

He wasn’t joking. Not only did the then-10-year-old earn a staggering $4.5 million for the 1992 sequel — the highest salary ever paid to a child actor at the time — but his contract also included a 15% cut of all merchandising, including sales of the now-iconic Talkboy.

Mickey’s Home Alone premieres November 26, 2026, at 6 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Jr., before becoming available to stream on Disney+ on November 27.
